Central Asia eSIM for Indians (2026): Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and more
One regional eSIM for four Central Asian countries, a separate plan for Mongolia, and where Jio and Airtel packs work, with prices checked in October 2026.
A Kazakhstan eSIM for Indians is only part of the answer on a Central Asia trip, because Jio, Airtel and our own plans each cover a different set of countries. The choice between a roaming pack, a local SIM and a travel eSIM changes from Almaty to Bishkek to Mongolia.
Yes, Jio works in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan with its ₹951 10-day pack (4 GB), but Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia are only on its dearer 132-country and data-only lists, and Tajikistan is on none; Airtel lists all five. eSIMKite's 5-country Central Asia and Caucasus plan covers Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan at ₹949 for 5 GB over 30 days, and a 4-country version adds Tajikistan (₹1,199). Mongolia needs its own plan (₹2,099).
Which plan covers which country
| Country | eSIMKite country plan, 5 GB, 30 days | In our regional plans? | Jio packs | Airtel packs | UPI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kazakhstan | ₹599 | Both Central Asia plans, Asia, Global | 75-, 100- and 132-country lists | Yes | No |
| Uzbekistan | ₹499 | Both Central Asia plans, Asia, Global | All lists, data-only included | Yes | Announced 30 Aug 2026, not yet confirmed at shops |
| Kyrgyzstan | ₹599 | Both Central Asia plans, Asia, Global | 132-country and data-only lists only | Yes | No |
| Tajikistan | ₹1,199 | 4-country Central Asia plan and Global only | Not on Jio's lists | Yes | No |
| Mongolia | ₹2,099 | No | 132-country and data-only lists only | Yes | No |
eSIMKite prices and plan lists, 21 Oct 2026. Jio lists from Jio's PDFs and Airtel's from airtel.in, read 20-21 Oct 2026. UPI from BusinessLine and Business Today, 31 Aug 2026.
Regional plan vs country plans: read the coverage list
Each regional plan lists its countries on the plan card, and our Central Asia page has two versions. On 21 October 2026, the 5-country Central Asia and Caucasus plans (5 GB ₹949, 10 GB ₹1,799, Unlimited for 7 days ₹1,299) covered Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan but not Tajikistan. The 4-country version (5 GB ₹1,199, 10 GB ₹2,199, Unlimited for 7 days ₹2,499) and our Global plans (5 GB ₹1,499, 10 GB ₹2,599) also covered Tajikistan. Our 21-country Asia plans covered the first three only. None covered Mongolia.
For any two or three of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, the 5-country Central Asia plan at ₹949 costs less than two country plans (₹599 plus ₹499) and needs no eSIM switch at the border. For Uzbekistan alone, the ₹499 country plan is enough. Add Tajikistan and you need the 4-country version or a Global plan; add Mongolia and you need its plan as well. Never assume a country plan works next door.

In Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, 1 GB for 7 days is ₹149 and 10 GB for 30 days is ₹999 to ₹1,099. Unlimited gives 1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 Kbps: ₹349 for 3 days, or ₹749 to ₹799 for 7. Skip 7-day fixed plans: 5 GB for 7 days is ₹2,999, against ₹599 or less for 30 days.
Country by country
Kazakhstan
Our Kazakhstan plan connects to Tele2.kz and Beeline. Kazakhstan is on all three of Jio's voice-and-data lists, so the ₹589 1-day pack (1 GB, 100 minutes, 20 SMS) and the ₹951 10-day pack both work; without a pack, Jio charges about ₹10 per MB and ₹10 a minute for calls. Airtel lists it too. UPI was not live on 31 August 2026, so carry a card. Bolt's official city list includes Almaty but not Astana. We could not confirm airport SIM prices or operator rankings.
Uzbekistan
Our Uzbekistan plan connects to Beeline; Ookla puts the median mobile download at 132.14 Mbps (66th in the world). In Opensignal's March 2026 report, Ucell was fastest (22.9 Mbps average download, Beeline 21.6) and UZTELECOM had the best coverage. Ucell's Welcome plan is UZS 50,000 a month for 22 GB, and a new Ucell eSIM is free in its app.
A phone used with a local Uzbek SIM must be registered in UzIMEI within 60 days (UZS 82,400); Mobiuz says visitors who only roam on a foreign SIM need not register. Arrivals with phones fill in a customs declaration. Indians apply for the USD 20 e-Visa at e-visa.gov.uz; since 1 September 2026, holders of a valid multiple-entry tourist or business visa from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the US, the UK or a Schengen state can stay 30 days visa-free with a ticket to India or a third country (Kursiv).
Kyrgyzstan
Our Kyrgyzstan plan connects to Beeline; Ookla puts the median mobile download at 68.10 Mbps (85th). O! says it covers 99.8% of populated areas, and sells foreigners an eSIM in the My O! app: register with any passport, pick a number and plan, and pay, with no shop visit, but only after you land and the phone is on a Kyrgyz network. Jio's ₹589 and ₹951 packs do not work here; only its 132-country (₹1,499 for 14 days, 2 GB) and data-only packs do. Yandex Go takes card or cash. Indians generally need an e-Visa from evisa.e-gov.kg.
Tajikistan
Our Tajikistan plan connects to ZET and MegaFon and costs more than its neighbours: ₹1,199 for 5 GB over 30 days, or ₹249 for 1 GB over 7 days. It is on our 4-country Central Asia plan and the Global plans, not the 5-country version or Asia. No Jio pack covers Tajikistan, so Jio charges about ₹2 per MB, ₹25 a minute for calls and ₹50 a minute for incoming calls. Airtel lists it. UPI was not live on 31 August 2026. The official e-Visa site is evisa.tj.
Mongolia
Our Mongolia plan connects to Mobicom and is on none of our regional plans: 1 GB for 7 days is ₹499, 5 GB for 30 days ₹2,099 and 10 GB ₹3,799. Jio covers Mongolia only with its 132-country and data-only packs; without one it charges about ₹2 per MB and ₹5 a minute for calls. Airtel lists it, and UPI does not work there. Indians are eligible for the official e-visa at evisa.mn, whose terms say your host must register you online within 48 hours of arrival and you must register with the Immigration Agency within 7 working days.
Student first week in Bishkek
If you are moving to Bishkek to study, a travel eSIM gets you online as soon as you land, for maps, Yandex Go and WhatsApp calls home: our Kyrgyzstan plan has 10 GB for 30 days at ₹1,099, or Unlimited for 30 days at ₹2,799. Keep your Indian SIM in for bank OTPs.
Once your phone is on a Kyrgyz network, get a local number. O!'s eSIM for foreigners is registered in the My O! app with your passport and gives you a Kyrgyz number for taxi, banking and delivery apps; physical SIMs are sold at O!Store shops, also registered with a passport. To keep your Indian number reachable all year, Jio's 365-day pack (₹2,799 for 3 GB and 100 minutes) covers Kyrgyzstan.
Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI
eSIMKite plans are data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, so your number, WhatsApp and bank SMS stay with it. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.
- Jio: the ₹589 and ₹951 packs include 20 and 25 SMS, and the ₹1,499 132-country pack 100 SMS. Tajikistan has no Jio pack, so check in MyJio what receiving SMS costs there.
- Airtel prepaid: all five countries are on Airtel's list. The 5-day and 10-day packs include 20 SMS, and the IR activation pack is ₹118 for 28 days at standard charges.
- Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month include one free 5-day roaming trip a year from 8 Oct 2026, with free incoming SMS; the countries are not listed.
- Vi: check the roaming and SMS rules for your plan in the Vi app.
- App blocks: Freedom House's 2025 report records some social media or communication apps blocked in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan (June 2024 to May 2025), without naming them in the summary we used. Keep a second messaging app as a backup.
- UPI: in Uzbekistan, paying by scanning UZQR codes with a UPI app was announced on 30 August 2026, but live payments at shops are not yet confirmed. UPI was not live in the other four countries on 31 August 2026. Carry a card and some cash: Yandex Go's Uzbekistan page says rides are paid in cash.
Set it up at home
- Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
- Buy one Central Asia plan, or one plan per country (plus a Mongolia plan if you are going there), and scan each QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India.
- On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
- On landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the mobile data line.
Step-by-step pictures for iPhone and Android are in how to install a travel eSIM.
When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice
Calls on your Indian number: Jio's ₹951 pack gives 4 GB with 100 outgoing and 100 incoming minutes for 10 days in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan; it costs more than our ₹499 or ₹599 country plans but includes calls. Airtel's ₹1,298 pack gives 6 GB and 200 minutes in all five, less than our Mongolia 5 GB plan (₹2,099). Jio's Wi-Fi calling packs (₹121 for 100 minutes, ₹521 for 500) cover calls to India over Wi-Fi, if your phone supports it.
Long stays and heavy data: a local SIM gives far more data. Ucell's Welcome plan has 22 GB a month for UZS 50,000, and O!'s eSIM comes with a Kyrgyz number. The trade-offs are setup after landing and, in Uzbekistan, paid UzIMEI registration for your phone within 60 days.
When our eSIM makes sense: a multi-country route on one plan, data from the moment you land, and your Indian SIM kept for OTPs. More in Jio vs Airtel vs Vi roaming packs.
Questions
Does Jio or Airtel work in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan?
Yes. Both are on Jio's 75-, 100- and 132-country lists, so the ₹951 10-day pack (4 GB, 100 minutes out and 100 in) works in both, as do Airtel's ₹998 and ₹1,298 packs. Without a pack, Jio is very expensive in Uzbekistan.
Can I use my Indian SIM in Central Asia and still get bank OTPs?
Yes. Keep it on as the second line with data roaming off, and bank SMS reach you while the eSIM handles data. Check what receiving SMS costs in your operator's app, especially in Tajikistan, where Jio has no pack.
Do I need a SIM card at the airport in Almaty or Tashkent?
No. A travel eSIM installed at home connects when you land. For a local number later, Ucell in Uzbekistan and O! in Kyrgyzstan sell eSIMs you set up in their apps after arrival. We could not confirm airport SIM prices in Kazakhstan.
Does a Kazakhstan eSIM work in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan?
Do not count on it: a country plan is for that country. Our 5-country Central Asia and Caucasus plan covers Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan on one eSIM at ₹949 for 5 GB over 30 days, and the 4-country version (₹1,199) adds Tajikistan.
Which network is best in Almaty and Tashkent?
In Uzbekistan as a whole, Opensignal's March 2026 report named Ucell fastest and most reliable and UZTELECOM best for coverage; our plan uses Beeline, close behind Ucell on speed. We could not confirm a current ranking for Kazakhstan; our plan there uses Tele2.kz and Beeline.
What SIM does an MBBS student need in Bishkek?
Start with a travel eSIM for the first days, with your Indian SIM on for OTPs. Then get a local number: O!'s eSIM for foreigners is registered in the My O! app with your passport once you have landed.
Does Mongolia need a separate plan?
Yes. None of our regional plans covers Mongolia, so buy the Mongolia plan: ₹2,099 for 5 GB over 30 days. Jio covers it only with the 132-country and data-only packs, and Airtel lists it.
Can I share the eSIM as a hotspot?
Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
