Does Jio work in Georgia? Only at pay-as-you-go rates, as in Armenia, so most Indian travellers choose between an Airtel pack, a local SIM bought after landing and a travel eSIM set up at home. On a Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Yerevan trip, the other question is which plan keeps working after the border.

Short answer

Jio works in Georgia only at pay-as-you-go rates (about ₹2 per MB), because neither Georgia nor Armenia is on any Jio roaming pack list; Airtel's packs cover both, from ₹998 for 5 days with 4 GB. One eSIM can cover the whole trip: eSIMKite's Europe plan includes Georgia and Armenia at ₹899 for 5 GB over 30 days. For Georgia alone, 5 GB is ₹649; for Armenia alone, ₹849.

eSIMKite prices from esimkite.com, 21 Oct 2026. Jio lists and rates from jio.com (Georgia rates 14 Oct 2026, Armenia 21 Feb 2023). Airtel from airtel.in and TelecomTalk (6 Aug 2026). Ucom from ucom.am, 21 Oct 2026.

Other Georgia plans run 30 days: 3 GB is ₹449, 10 GB ₹1,299 and 20 GB ₹2,399, and 1 GB for 7 days is ₹149. In Armenia the same sizes are ₹549, ₹1,499 and ₹2,599, and 1 GB for 7 days is ₹199. Unlimited gives 1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 Kbps: ₹1,099 for 7 days in either country, or ₹1,399 for 10 days in Georgia and ₹1,499 in Armenia. Skip 7-day fixed plans: 5 GB for 7 days costs ₹849 in Georgia, against ₹649 for 30 days.

Networks in Georgia and Armenia

Georgia

Our Georgia plan connects to Magti, Geocell and Beeline, the networks listed on its plan card. Ookla's Speedtest Global Index for September 2026 puts Georgia's average mobile download at 226.67 Mbps ranking it 20th in the world for mobile, ahead of France, the UK and Japan.

Georgia is not on any Jio pack list. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹2 per MB and ₹10 a minute for calls to India, local calls and incoming calls (Jio's rate list, 14 Oct 2026). Airtel lists Georgia for its packs: ₹698 for 1 day, ₹998 for 5 days or ₹1,298 for 10 days. Bolt's official city list includes Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Gori, Telavi and the mountain resorts of Bakuriani and Gudauri/Stepantsminda (Kazbegi). We could not confirm airport SIM prices, airport Wi-Fi or card acceptance in Georgia from a dated source.

Armenia

Our Armenia plan lists Vivacell, Beeline and MTS as its networks. Ookla puts Armenia's median mobile download at 103.90 Mbps (76th in the world, September 2026). Ucom says it has the widest 5G coverage in Armenia, reaching 48 cities and 94.6% of the population (the operator's own claim, Armenpress, 10 Sep 2026).

At Yerevan's Zvartnots airport, Viva, Team and Ucom have kiosks in arrivals, open around the clock; prices there are slightly higher than in town, and registration with your passport is mandatory. Ucom's uWelcome tourist plan is AMD 2,500 for 15 days with unlimited data (512 kbps after 200 GB), 300 minutes and 300 local SMS, for smartphones only. Hotspot use may be limited, and it renews every 15 days if your balance allows. Team's Welcome plan has no bundle: data is AMD 50 per MB.

Jio has no pack for Armenia, and its pay-as-you-go rates are steep: about ₹586 per MB, ₹150 a minute for calls to India and ₹75 a minute for incoming calls (Jio's rate list, updated 21 Feb 2023). Airtel lists Armenia for its packs. Yandex Go shows the fare upfront and takes cash or card.

Tbilisi to Yerevan by road: what changes on your phone

The main road crossings from Georgia are Bagratashen and Bavra. Between January and October 2025, 20% of Armenia's tourists entered through Bagratashen and 10% through Bavra, against 60% through Zvartnots airport (Armenpress). Ucom says its 5G reaches both checkpoints, as well as the Yerevan-Dilijan highway.

Our Georgia plan is for Georgia and the Armenia plan for Armenia, so do not count on either across the border. Buy the Europe plan, which covers both on one eSIM, or install both country plans at home and switch your mobile data line after the border. A Ucom uWelcome SIM will not help in Georgia: its allowance cannot be used while roaming.

Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI

eSIMKite plans are data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, so your number, WhatsApp and bank SMS stay with it. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.

  • Jio: neither country is on a Jio pack list, so everything is at standard rates. Check in MyJio what receiving SMS costs there before you fly.
  • Airtel prepaid: both countries are on Airtel's list. The 5-day and 10-day packs include 20 SMS, and the IR activation pack is ₹118 for 28 days at standard charges.
  • Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month include one free 5-day roaming trip a year from 8 Oct 2026, with free incoming SMS. Airtel has not listed the countries.
  • Vi: check the roaming and SMS rules for your plan in the Vi app.
  • WhatsApp: messages and calls go over data. Freedom House's 2025 report found no blocks on communication apps in Armenia; we found no dated source on call-app rules in Georgia.
  • UPI: UPI merchant payments were not live in Georgia or Armenia on 31 August 2026, so carry a card or forex card.
Avoid bill shock. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹586 per MB of data in Armenia and ₹150 a minute for calls to India. Turn data roaming off for your Indian SIM and choose the eSIM as your mobile data line.

Before you land

  • Georgia visa: apply, pay and receive the e-Visa on the official portal, evisa.gov.ge, which also links to insurance providers.
  • Armenia visa: the Foreign Ministry lists India among countries that need one, issued at evisa.mfa.am, and the Indian Embassy notes that a Schengen visa alone does not count.
  • Apps: install Bolt for Georgia and Yandex Go for Yerevan, and download offline maps for the mountain roads.

First week for students in Tbilisi and Yerevan

About 2,066 Indian students live in Armenia, mainly medical students at Yerevan State Medical University and four or five private universities (Embassy of India, June 2026). For the first days, a travel eSIM gets you online from landing, while your Indian SIM keeps bank OTPs coming.

For a full term you will want a local number. In Yerevan, take your passport to any of the three operators; Ucom's uWelcome renews every 15 days if your balance allows, and Ucom issues its own eSIM only in person at a service centre. In Tbilisi we could not confirm local SIM terms, so a 30-day Georgia plan, such as 10 GB for ₹1,299 or 20 GB for ₹2,399, covers the first weeks while you settle in.

Set it up at home

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
  2. Buy the Europe plan for both countries, or one plan per country, and scan each QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India.
  3. On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
  4. On landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the mobile data line.

When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice

Airtel users who make many calls: ₹1,298 for 10 days gives 6 GB and 200 minutes in both countries, less than our Europe 10 GB plan (₹1,599), with calls on your own number. Jio has no pack here, so Jio users do better with a travel eSIM or a local SIM; for calls to India over hotel Wi-Fi, Jio's Wi-Fi calling packs cost ₹121 for 100 minutes or ₹521 for 500, if your phone supports Wi-Fi calling.

A long stay or heavy data in Armenia: Ucom's uWelcome at AMD 2,500 for 15 days gives far more data than our fixed plans, plus local minutes and an Armenian number. The trade-offs are a kiosk visit, passport registration and an allowance that stops at the Georgian border.

When our eSIM makes sense: one plan for both countries, set up at home and working from landing, with your Indian SIM kept for OTPs. More in Jio vs Airtel vs Vi roaming packs.

Questions

Does Jio work in Georgia and Armenia?

Only at pay-as-you-go rates: neither country is on any Jio roaming pack list. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹2 per MB in Georgia and about ₹586 per MB in Armenia, so keep data roaming off and use a travel eSIM or an Airtel pack.

Can I use my Indian SIM in Georgia and Armenia?

Yes. Keep it in the phone as the second line for calls and bank SMS, with data roaming off. Airtel's packs cover both countries, from ₹698 for 1 day; Jio has none, so check its rates in MyJio first.

Do I need a SIM card at Tbilisi or Yerevan airport?

No, not if you install a travel eSIM at home; it connects when you land. For an Armenian number, Viva, Team and Ucom have round-the-clock kiosks in arrivals at Zvartnots; bring your passport. We could not confirm tourist SIM prices at Tbilisi airport.

Does a Georgia eSIM work in Armenia?

Do not count on it: our Georgia plan is for Georgia. The Europe plan covers both countries on one eSIM at ₹899 for 5 GB over 30 days, or you can add an Armenia plan from ₹199.

Which network is best at Kazbegi?

We could not find an official, dated coverage comparison for Kazbegi, so we cannot honestly name one. Our Georgia plan can use Magti, Geocell and Beeline, and your phone picks the strongest. Download offline maps before the mountain road.

What SIM does a medical student need in the first week?

A travel eSIM covers the first days, with your Indian SIM kept on for OTPs. Then get a local number: in Yerevan the three operators register SIMs with your passport, and Ucom issues eSIMs in person only. In Tbilisi, a 30-day Georgia plan, such as 10 GB for ₹1,299, bridges the gap while you sort out a local SIM.

Will bank OTPs and WhatsApp work?

Usually, yes. Bank SMS arrive on your Indian SIM while the eSIM handles data, if your plan receives SMS abroad, and WhatsApp keeps your Indian number. Freedom House found no app blocks in Armenia; we have no official source for Georgia.

Can I share the eSIM as a hotspot?

Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
