Turkey (Türkiye) eSIM for Indians (2026): Istanbul, Cappadocia, Jio and unlimited plans

What staying online in Istanbul and Cappadocia costs, which plan to pick, and how to keep bank OTPs coming to your Indian number.

You have three ways to stay online in Türkiye: a Jio or Airtel roaming pack, a Turkcell tourist SIM, or a travel eSIM installed at home before you fly. If Türkiye is one stop on a Europe trip, check first whether your Europe plan includes it.

Short answer

A Europe eSIM works in Turkey only if Türkiye is on that plan's country list, and not every Europe plan includes it, so check the list or buy a Turkey plan. eSIMKite's Turkey plans cost ₹549 for 10 GB or ₹399 for 5 GB, each for 30 days, against ₹951 for 4 GB on Jio's 10-day pack and ₹1,298 for 6 GB on Airtel's. Keep your Indian SIM on as a second line so bank OTPs still reach you.

Other sizes: 1 GB for 7 days is ₹89, enough for a layover, and 3 GB is ₹249, 20 GB ₹1,199 and 50 GB ₹2,599, each for 30 days. Unlimited plans give 1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 Kbps: ₹249 for 3 days, ₹349 for 5, ₹649 for 10, ₹949 for 15 and ₹1,799 for 30. Unlimited with no daily cap is ₹699 for 3 days, ₹1,499 for 7 and ₹5,999 for 30. The 30-day 10 GB plan at ₹549 costs less than the 7-day version at ₹1,099. All plans are on the Turkey eSIM page.

Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom

Türkiye has three mobile networks: Turkcell, Vodafone Türkiye and Türk Telekom. eSIMKite's Turkey plans connect to Turkcell and Vodafone, and your phone uses whichever it finds. All three started commercial 5G on the same day, 1 April 2026, so 5G is new and still being rolled out: expect a mostly 4G experience.

We could not confirm an independent network test for Cappadocia, Pamukkale or the coast for this guide, so we do not rank the networks there. Download offline maps before day trips out of the cities.

Turkey-only plan vs Europe plan

This is the trap on combined trips. A Europe eSIM works in Türkiye only if Türkiye is on that plan's country list, and not every Europe plan includes it, so read the list before you pay. If your trip is Türkiye only, a Turkey plan is simpler: 10 GB for 30 days is ₹549, on Turkcell and Vodafone.

If Türkiye is one stop on a longer tour, compare a Turkey plan for the Turkish days plus a plan for the rest against one Europe plan that lists Türkiye. Our Europe guide shows which Europe plans include Türkiye.

Istanbul layover: what to buy in 8 hours

If you stay airside, you may not need anything. Istanbul Airport has free, unlimited Wi-Fi: on 'iGA WiFi' you log in with a code sent by SMS to your phone number, or scan your passport at a terminal kiosk to get an access code. Turkish Airlines passengers can also use 'TK WiFi' with their ticket number, seat and surname after check-in.

If you plan to go into the city, check the visa rules first (see below). For a few hours of maps and taxis, 1 GB for 7 days is ₹89 on the eSIM, or Unlimited for 3 days is ₹249; Airtel's 1-day roaming pack is ₹698 for 1 GB and 100 minutes. Uber works for booking local taxis in Istanbul, including pick-ups at Istanbul Airport.

Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI

A travel eSIM is data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, so bank SMS still reach your number and WhatsApp keeps your Indian number. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.

  • Jio: keep your plan valid and the SIM switched on. The 10-day and 14-day packs include 25 and 50 SMS. Without a pack, calls in Türkiye cost ₹10 a minute, incoming included. Check in the MyJio app what receiving SMS costs.
  • Airtel prepaid: the ₹118 activation pack (28 days) turns roaming on at standard charges without buying data. Check SMS charges in the Airtel Thanks app.
  • Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month include one free 5-day roaming trip a year (5 GB, 60 minutes, free incoming SMS), but Airtel has not listed the countries.
  • Vi: check your roaming options and SMS charges in the Vi app before you fly.
  • WhatsApp and FaceTime calls go over the eSIM's data. Türkiye has, however, restricted social media and messaging during political events: Human Rights Watch reports that from late on 7 September 2025, X, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal were inaccessible in Istanbul for about 21 hours. HRW also says most major VPN providers have been blocked for years, so a VPN is not a reliable workaround. Keep your Indian SIM on so normal calls and SMS remain an option.
  • UPI does not work in Turkish shops: Türkiye was not among the places accepting UPI merchant payments on 31 August 2026, so carry a card or forex card.
Avoid bill shock. Turn data roaming off for your Indian SIM unless you have bought a pack. Without one, Jio charges about ₹10 per MB of data in Türkiye, and app updates and photo backups run in the background.

Before you land

  • Visa: Indians need a visa for Türkiye, and holders of a valid Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit may qualify for a one-month e-Visa; check the Turkish foreign ministry.
  • Airport Wi-Fi: Istanbul Airport's 'iGA WiFi' needs an SMS code or a passport scan at a kiosk. If your Indian SIM is not set up to receive SMS abroad, use the kiosk.
  • Getting around Istanbul: contactless credit and debit cards work on all public transport except Marmaray, but an Istanbulkart gives cheaper fares. Under the tariff in force since 16 February 2026, a full fare is about USD 0.96 and a first transfer about USD 0.73, paid in lira; crossing between Europe and Asia by bridge costs double.

The 120-day phone rule

Türkiye controls foreign phones by their IMEI number. A foreign phone can be used for 120 days without registration, on roaming, a travel eSIM or a Turkish SIM. After that, it is blocked on Turkish networks unless it is registered. Registering means paying a tax of tens of thousands of lira at a tax office, then registering at an operator shop or on e-Devlet, and it is allowed for one phone per passport every three years.

For a holiday this does not matter: roaming days on your Indian SIM count towards the 120 days too, so short trips need no registration. It matters if you stay more than four months.

Set it up at home

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
  2. Buy the Turkey plan and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India. It takes about two minutes.
  3. Leave the eSIM line off until you land. On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
  4. After landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the line for mobile data.

Step-by-step pictures for iPhone and Android are in how to install a travel eSIM.

When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice

A roaming pack is the better buy if you will make many normal calls on your Indian number: Jio's ₹951 pack has 100 minutes out and 100 in over 10 days, its ₹2,851 pack gives 12 GB and 150 minutes each way over 30 days, and Airtel's ₹1,298 pack has 200 minutes. See Jio vs Airtel vs Vi roaming packs.

A Turkcell tourist line suits you if you want a Turkish number and plenty of calls. The Tourist Welcome Pack gives 20 GB, 200 minutes and 100 SMS for 1,800 TL, valid 28 days, at up to 300 Mbps with hotspot allowed. It is only for a new prepaid line opened with a foreign passport, it works in Türkiye only, and only a passport is accepted as ID. You can order online up to 90 days before arrival, then activate it as an eSIM in the Turkcell app (with a chip passport, a phone with eSIM and NFC, and a video check) or collect a free SIM or eSIM at any Turkcell store.

Questions

Does Jio work in Turkey?

Yes. Türkiye is on Jio's 100-country roaming list: ₹951 buys 4 GB for 10 days with 100 minutes out and 100 in, and ₹1,551 buys 8 GB for 14 days. After the quota, data slows to 64 kbps. For data alone, 10 GB on the eSIM is ₹549 for 30 days.

Can I use my Indian SIM in Turkey?

Yes, on a Jio or Airtel roaming pack; Airtel's are ₹998 for 4 GB over 5 days and ₹1,298 for 6 GB over 10 days. A foreign phone can be used for 120 days without registration, and roaming days count towards that, so a holiday needs no paperwork.

Do I need a SIM card in Turkey or at Istanbul Airport?

No, if you install a travel eSIM before you fly: it connects when you land, and your Indian SIM stays in the phone for OTPs. On an airside layover, Istanbul Airport's free Wi-Fi may be enough. A Turkcell tourist SIM is worth it if you want a Turkish number.

Does a Europe eSIM work in Türkiye?

Only if Türkiye is on that plan's country list, and not every Europe plan includes it. Check before you buy, or use a Turkey plan for the Turkish part of the trip.

Which network is best in Cappadocia?

We could not confirm a network test for Cappadocia itself. eSIMKite's Turkey plans connect to Turkcell and Vodafone, two of Türkiye's three networks, and the phone picks whichever is available. 5G only began on 1 April 2026, so expect mostly 4G.

Is truly unlimited data available, and what is the fair-use limit?

Yes. Turkey also has Unlimited plans with no daily cap: ₹699 for 3 days, ₹1,499 for 7, ₹2,999 for 15 and ₹5,999 for 30. The lower-priced Unlimited plans give 1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 Kbps, from ₹249 for 3 days to ₹1,799 for 30. Check each plan's terms on the Turkey eSIM page before you buy.

Will OTPs and WhatsApp work in Turkey?

OTPs, yes, if your Indian SIM stays on as the second line with roaming active; check in your operator's app what receiving SMS costs. WhatsApp works over the eSIM's data, but Türkiye has restricted messaging apps during political events, such as for about 21 hours in Istanbul in September 2025.

Can I share the eSIM as a hotspot?

Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
