Carrier-locked?

Unlocked phones only.

Phones bought on a contract or payment plan are sometimes locked to one carrier. A locked phone can't use a travel eSIM, even if the model supports it.

  • Check on iPhoneSettings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say “No SIM restrictions”.
  • Check on AndroidInsert a SIM from another carrier, or look for Network unlock in Settings > Connections.
  • Still locked?Ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel. Many do it free once the phone is paid off.

Most phones from 2019 onward do — iPhone XS and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Your phone also needs to be network-unlocked. Dial *#06# — if you see an EID number, you're set.

No. Your phone holds the eSIM and your home SIM side by side. Keep the home SIM in and switched on: it is how calls, SMS and bank OTPs reach you while the eSIM carries your data.

No. The eSIM installs as a second line alongside your physical SIM. Your own number stays active for calls, SMS and OTPs — just keep its mobile data switched off so you don't get roaming charges.

On an iPhone: Settings › Mobile Service › Mobile Data, choose the travel line, then turn Data Roaming on for it. On Android: Settings › Network & internet › SIMs, set the travel eSIM for mobile data and turn Roaming on. Leave calls and SMS on your home SIM.

Yes. WhatsApp stays linked to your home number and keeps working over the eSIM's data — chats, calls and video calls. You do not change your number, so there is nothing to re-verify.
