Jamaica, Bahamas and Greater Caribbean eSIM for Indians (2026): cruises and US territories
Which plan works on which island, what Jio and Airtel cover, and how to keep data and bank OTPs working on a Caribbean cruise.
Choosing a Jamaica or Bahamas eSIM for Indians starts with your island list, because no single plan covers every island. Compare a Jio or Airtel pack, a local SIM and a travel eSIM, and plan for time at sea on a cruise.
Yes, an eSIM works on a Caribbean cruise in port, on the island's land network, but at sea many ships switch to their own network, billed at maritime roaming rates, so turn data roaming off once you sail. Our Caribbean plan (₹3,999 for 5 GB over 30 days) covers Jamaica and Cayman but not the Bahamas, which needs its own ₹3,499 plan. Jio's ₹951 pack also skips the Bahamas.

One Caribbean plan or island plans: read the coverage list
On 21 October 2026 our 29-country Caribbean plan covered Turks and Caicos, Cayman, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Bermuda. It did not cover the Bahamas, Cuba, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands, and we have not assumed that our USA plan covers those two territories.
For one island, the country plan costs less than the ₹3,999 Caribbean plan. For two or more covered islands with 5 GB each, one Caribbean plan costs less than two ₹3,499 island plans and means one eSIM. For a single port day, 1 GB for 7 days is ₹849 in Jamaica.

eSIMKite from esimkite.com and Jio from jio.com, 20-21 Oct 2026; Airtel from TelecomTalk, 6 Aug 2026; Aliv (Bahamian dollars) from bealiv.com, 21 Oct 2026.
10 GB for 30 days is ₹4,999 in Jamaica, the Bahamas and Cayman, or ₹6,899 on the Caribbean plan. Unlimited (1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 Kbps) for 7 days is ₹6,699 in Jamaica and ₹10,799 on the Caribbean plan.
Cruise ports vs at sea
In port, your phone joins the island's land networks, and your eSIM works if the plan covers that island. Cellular at Sea, the onboard network on many cruise ships, says ships switch on their own network in international waters, about an hour from port, and your home carrier bills it at maritime roaming rates. Jio's and Airtel's lists name no cruise-ship networks, so a country pack does not cover time at sea.
- At sea, turn data roaming off on both lines, or use airplane mode with the ship's Wi-Fi. Phones use data in the background.
- Bahamas ports (Nassau, Freeport and cruise-line islands such as Coco Cay and Castaway Cay) need the Bahamas plan. We could not check coverage on the cruise-line islands.
- Keep the eSIM line off until your first covered port, since validity starts when it first connects.
Country by country
Bahamas
Our Bahamas plan connects to BTC; Aliv is the other operator. It costs ₹3,499 for 5 GB or ₹949 for 1 GB over 7 days. Aliv's prepaid 5 GB for 30 days is $40 (Bahamian dollars equal US dollars), and its plans renew automatically. Carry cash when exploring the Out Islands. Jio has no pack here, only its Global Pack (₹1,101 of credit at standard rates); Airtel's packs apply. Indians need a visa unless they hold a US, UK, Canadian or Schengen visa or residence, and need it on a cruise from the US too.
Turks and Caicos
Our plan connects to Flow, and Digicel also operates. It costs ₹3,499 for 5 GB or ₹799 for 1 GB over 7 days, and the islands are on the Caribbean plan. Jio's ₹951 ten-day pack and Airtel's packs apply. The US dollar is the currency; cards are widely accepted, but carry cash for taxis and small vendors.
Cayman Islands
Our plan connects to Flow, and Digicel also operates. It costs ₹3,499 for 5 GB or ₹899 for 1 GB over 7 days, and Cayman is on the Caribbean plan. Jio's ₹951 pack and Airtel's packs apply. US money is used alongside the Cayman Islands dollar, and many ATMs take overseas cards.
Jamaica
Jamaica's networks are Digicel and Flow, and our Jamaica plan uses both: ₹3,499 for 5 GB or ₹849 for 1 GB over 7 days. Digicel's SIM-To-Go costs J$750 at petrol stations and pharmacies and activates without a store visit; Flow's prepaid starts at J$440 for 12 GB, validity not stated. Jio's ₹951 and ₹1,499 packs apply, as do Airtel's. Fill in the C5 customs form online before you arrive. PICA lists India as 'no visa required'.
Cuba
ETECSA, the state company, is the only mobile provider. Freedom House rates Cuba 'Not Free', with poor connections amid power cuts and signs of blocking on some messaging apps. Our Cuba plan is expensive: ₹4,899 for 1 GB over 7 days, ₹19,699 for 5 GB. ETECSA's CubacelTur visitor line is sold at airports; packages are paid with UnionPay or Mir cards, or bought from its distributors. Neither Jio nor Airtel covers Cuba. The UK Foreign Office says Visa and Mastercard no longer work, so carry US dollars or euros, and that internet access can be blocked at times of political tension.
Dominican Republic
Ookla put the median mobile download at 205.29 Mbps in September 2026. Our Dominican Republic plan connects to Claro and Altice and costs ₹1,399 for 5 GB or ₹349 for 1 GB over 7 days. A Claro or Altice SIM costs under US$5, but you need an unlocked phone and your passport, which the law requires. No Jio pack covers the country (about ₹10 per MB on Jio's February 2023 rate card); Airtel's packs apply. Flight passengers must fill in the free E-Ticket form; cruise passengers do not.
Haiti
The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Haiti because of the volatile security situation. For those who go, our Haiti plan connects to Digicel and costs ₹3,499 for 5 GB or ₹949 for 1 GB over 7 days, and Haiti is on the Caribbean plan. Jio's ₹951 pack and Airtel's packs apply. Tourists pay a US$10 entry fee in cash on arrival.
Bermuda
Our Bermuda plan connects to One and costs ₹2,699 for 5 GB or ₹899 for 1 GB over 7 days; Digicel also operates, and Bermuda is on the Caribbean plan. Jio's ₹951 pack and Airtel's packs apply. The Bermuda dollar trades one to one with the US dollar. Visitors arriving by air or yacht must fill in the free Bermuda Arrival Card before landing.
US territories: Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands
Yes, Jio works in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Its USA, Mexico and Canada packs are valid in both: ₹1,555 for 15 days (12 GB, 150 outgoing minutes, unlimited incoming) or ₹2,555 for 30 days (25 GB). US entry rules apply, so Indians need a US B1/B2 visa. Neither territory is on our Caribbean plan.
Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico's networks are Claro, Liberty and T-Mobile. In Opensignal's June 2026 report, T-Mobile won all four speed awards (119.5 Mbps average download) and Claro won Coverage Experience. Our Puerto Rico plan connects to Claro and Liberty and costs ₹849 for 5 GB; Unlimited is ₹1,499 for 7 days.
US Virgin Islands
Our US Virgin Islands plan costs ₹2,399 for 5 GB or ₹599 for 1 GB over 7 days. Jio's ₹1,555 pack gives 12 GB for 15 days with calls, so Jio users may do better on roaming here. Airtel names only 'USA' on its list, so check in the Airtel Thanks app. The currency is the US dollar, and most places take cards, Visa and Mastercard most widely.
Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI
A travel eSIM is data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, with your number, WhatsApp and bank SMS. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.
- Jio: the ₹951 pack includes 25 SMS. Where there is no Jio pack, check in MyJio what receiving SMS costs.
- Airtel prepaid: the IR activation pack is ₹118 for 28 days at standard charges; check in Airtel Thanks whether you need it for SMS abroad.
- Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month include one free 5-day roaming trip a year with free incoming SMS; Airtel has not listed the countries.
- WhatsApp: no blocks reported in the Bahamas or Jamaica; some messaging apps showed signs of blocking in Cuba.
- UPI: not live on any island here (BusinessLine, August 2026). Carry a card and US dollars; Cuba needs cash.
Set it up at home
- Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
- Buy the Caribbean plan or one plan per island, and scan each QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India.
- On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
- After landing or docking, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the line for mobile data.
Step-by-step pictures are in how to install a travel eSIM.
When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice
Choose a Jio or Airtel pack for many normal calls on your Indian number: Jio's ₹951 pack has 100 outgoing and 100 incoming minutes over 10 days, and Airtel's ₹1,298 pack has 200 minutes. In the US Virgin Islands, Jio's ₹1,555 pack costs less than our 5 GB plan. Jio's ₹121 Wi-Fi calling pack (100 minutes) suits calls to India over hotel Wi-Fi.
Choose a local SIM for a long stay on one island: under US$5 for Claro or Altice in the Dominican Republic, J$750 for Digicel's SIM-To-Go in Jamaica, or ETECSA's CubacelTur in Cuba.
Questions
Does an eSIM work on a Caribbean cruise ship?
In port, yes, if your plan covers that island. At sea, many ships switch to their own network, billed at maritime roaming rates, so turn data roaming off and use the ship's Wi-Fi.
Does Jio work in Jamaica, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands?
In Jamaica and Cayman, yes: the ₹951 ten-day pack applies. Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands take Jio's USA, Mexico and Canada packs, from ₹1,555. The Bahamas, Cuba and the Dominican Republic are on no Jio pack list.
Can I use my Indian SIM in the Caribbean and still get WhatsApp and OTPs?
Yes. Keep the Indian SIM on as the second line for bank SMS while the eSIM handles data, and WhatsApp keeps your Indian number. Leave data roaming off on the Indian SIM unless you have a pack.
Do I need a SIM card in Jamaica or the Bahamas?
No. A travel eSIM installed at home gives you data on arrival. A local SIM, such as Digicel's SIM-To-Go in Jamaica, suits a long stay.
Which plans exist for Jamaica, the Bahamas and Cayman, and is one Caribbean eSIM better?
Each has its own plan at ₹3,499 for 5 GB over 30 days. The Caribbean plan (₹3,999) covers Jamaica and Cayman but not the Bahamas, so it pays off when you visit two or more covered islands.
Is Cuba or Haiti practical for an eSIM?
Cuba is hard: one state network, poor connections, no Jio or Airtel cover, and our Cuba plan costs ₹19,699 for 5 GB. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Haiti; our Haiti plan runs on Digicel.
Can I share the eSIM as a hotspot?
Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
