West Africa eSIM for Indians (2026): Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire and neighbours

For business trips and family visits: which plan covers which country, what Jio and Airtel cost, and when a local SIM is the better choice.

Choosing a Nigeria SIM card for Indian travellers, or a travel eSIM instead, depends on how long you stay and which neighbours you visit. This guide compares a Jio or Airtel roaming pack, a local SIM and a travel eSIM for twelve West African countries.

Short answer

No single eSIM covers all of West Africa: our Africa plan (₹4,199 for 5 GB over 30 days) covers Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, Liberia, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, but not Togo, Sierra Leone, The Gambia or Cape Verde, and for one or two countries a country plan costs less: 5 GB is ₹949 in Ghana and ₹2,199 in Nigeria. In Nigeria, Jio's ₹951 10-day pack (4 GB with calls) costs less than our plan, but elsewhere Jio often has no pack and pay-as-you-go data reaches about ₹1,000 per MB in Cape Verde, so turn data roaming off on your Indian SIM.

Bill shock is the main risk here. Six of the twelve countries are on none of Jio's regular pack lists, and in Cape Verde Jio charges about ₹1,000 per MB without a pack (Jio, 14 Oct 2026). Turn data roaming off on your Indian SIM before you fly.

Regional plan or country plans

Read the coverage list on each plan card; do not assume. Our Africa plan (₹4,199 for 5 GB, ₹7,599 for 10 GB) covers Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, Liberia, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. Our Global plan (₹3,099 for 5 GB, ₹5,799 for 10 GB) covers the same list except Benin and Guinea. Neither covers Togo, Sierra Leone, The Gambia or Cape Verde. For Lagos and Accra, the Nigeria and Ghana plans (₹2,199 and ₹949) cost about the same as Global 5 GB but give 5 GB in each. The Global plan suits a loop through Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia and Guinea-Bissau, where one country's 5 GB plan costs as much.

Other Nigeria plans: 1 GB for 7 days is ₹499, and 3 GB ₹1,399 or 10 GB ₹3,899 for 30 days. Unlimited gives 1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 Kbps: ₹2,799 for 7 days in Nigeria, ₹1,699 in Ghana. See how much data you need.

Running low? You can request a top-up for the same eSIM from the top-up page, and we email you a payment link. If you will use video or social media every day, start with the bigger plan.

Jio tariffs updated 14 Oct 2026 (Togo record from Feb 2023; Guinea-Bissau empty on 21 Oct 2026). Airtel list read 21 Oct 2026.

Jio's Global Pack (₹1,101 or ₹1,102 for 28 days) covers Senegal, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Cape Verde, but its ₹933 of credit buys less than 1 MB of data in Cape Verde.

Country by country

Nigeria

Our Nigeria plans connect to MTN, Airtel and Glo. MTN had 52% of active mobile subscriptions in August 2026 and Airtel 34% (NCC); Ookla's September 2026 median download is 43.43 Mbps. Freedom House counted over 30 network disruptions in May 2025, mostly fibre cuts and power cuts, and Access Now counted 2 internet shutdowns in 2025. Nigerian SIM lines must be linked to a National Identification Number (NIN), and Glo's eSIM sign-up expects one, so a travel eSIM set up in India is simpler for a short visit. A business visa needs an invitation letter from a Nigerian company (immigration.gov.ng).

Ghana

Ghana is one of the few good-value countries here: our Ghana plans cost ₹599 for 3 GB and ₹949 for 5 GB. They include MTN, which had 80% of mobile data subscriptions in July 2026 (NCA); Ookla's September 2026 median is 33.78 Mbps. Jio's 132-country and data-only packs work, but not the ₹951 pack. Freedom House (2025) finds little technical censorship. e-Visas: evisa.immigration.gov.gh.

Senegal

Our Senegal plans list Orange and Free: ₹1,499 for 5 GB, or ₹2,399 for 7 days of Unlimited. Jio has only its Global Pack here, with steep pay-as-you-go rates: ₹250 a minute for calls to India. Airtel's packs list Senegal. Access Now's report on 2025 lists no internet shutdown in Senegal.

Côte d'Ivoire

Our Côte d'Ivoire plans use Orange and cost ₹799 for 1 GB over 7 days or ₹3,099 for 5 GB, which is high: Airtel's ₹1,298 10-day pack costs less. Jio's 132-country and data-only packs work here. Access Now lists no shutdown here in 2025. The only approved e-Visa portal is SNEDAI (snedai.com): 73 euros for 3 months, multiple entries.

Benin

Our Benin plans use Celtiis: ₹699 for 1 GB over 7 days, ₹2,999 for 5 GB. MTN, Celtiis and Moov Africa share the market (ARCEP, end of 2025). The Africa plan covers Benin; the Global plan does not. Jio's 132-country packs and Airtel's packs work. On 7 December 2025, the day of an attempted coup, traffic fell by up to 80% for about an hour; Cloudflare could not say whether the two were linked.

Togo

Our Togo plans are very expensive: ₹2,999 for 1 GB over 7 days and ₹13,299 for 5 GB, and no regional plan covers Togo. Airtel's packs do not cover it and Jio has no pack. For more than a day, a local SIM is the realistic choice, from Moov or Yas Togo, though we have no local prices. After protests began on 26 June 2025, Togo blocked Facebook, Telegram, Signal and YouTube, some for about three months, and throttled the internet daily from 9am to midnight from 1 July to 5 September 2025 (Access Now).

Sierra Leone

Our Sierra Leone plans use Orange and cost ₹899 for 1 GB over 7 days or ₹3,999 for 5 GB; no regional plan covers the country. Airtel's packs list it, so an Airtel user pays ₹1,298 for 6 GB over 10 days, about a third of our 5 GB price. Jio has only its Global Pack. Access Now lists no shutdown here in 2025.

Liberia

Our Liberia plans use Lonestar Cell MTN and Orange: ₹749 for 1 GB over 7 days, ₹3,099 for 5 GB, and both regional plans cover Liberia. Jio's 132-country pack and Airtel's packs work. Access Now lists no shutdown here in 2025. Apply online for the visa on arrival first; the fee is USD 102.5 (visaonarrival.lis.gov.lr).

The Gambia

Our Gambia plans use Africell: ₹749 for 1 GB over 7 days, ₹2,499 for 5 GB. No regional plan covers The Gambia. Jio has only its Global Pack; Airtel's packs list it. Freedom House (2025) records no content blocking.

Guinea

Our Guinea plans use Orange: ₹749 for 1 GB over 7 days, ₹3,299 for 5 GB. The Africa plan covers Guinea; the Global plan does not. Jio's 132-country packs and Airtel's packs work. Access Now counted 2 election-related internet shutdowns in 2025.

Guinea-Bissau

Our Guinea-Bissau plans include Orange and cost ₹749 for 1 GB over 7 days or ₹3,099 for 5 GB; both regional plans cover it. Jio has no pack, no Global Pack and no listed rates here. Airtel's packs list Guinea-Bissau. Access Now counted one internet shutdown here in 2025, during protests or political instability.

Cape Verde

Cape Verde is the costliest place here to roam on Jio. Our Cape Verde plans use CVMOVEL but are high too, at ₹1,199 for 1 GB over 7 days and ₹4,199 for 5 GB, and no regional plan covers it. Airtel's ₹1,298 10-day pack is the better buy for Airtel users. India is not on Cabo Verde's list of nationalities needing a visa before arrival from 1 January 2026; check ease.gov.cv.

Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI

eSIMKite plans are data only. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone as the second line, so your number, WhatsApp and UPI apps stay as they are. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.

  • Jio: the ₹951 pack in Nigeria includes 25 SMS and the ₹1,499 132-country pack 100 SMS. Elsewhere, check in MyJio how SMS are charged.
  • Airtel prepaid: packs list every country here except Togo; the 5-day and 10-day packs include 20 SMS.
  • WhatsApp and app blocks: we have no recent WhatsApp test data here. Togo blocked Telegram, Signal, Facebook and YouTube in 2025, and Nigeria, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau had shutdowns that year (Access Now).
  • UPI: not live in any of the twelve (BusinessLine, 31 Aug 2026). Carry a card or cash; five countries here use the CFA franc (BCEAO).
Avoid bill shock. Keep data roaming off on the Indian SIM. On Jio without a pack, answering a 10-minute call in Senegal costs ₹1,000.

Set it up at home

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
  2. Buy a plan for each country, or a regional plan that lists them all, and scan the QR codes on Wi-Fi before you leave India.
  3. On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
  4. On landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the mobile data line.

Step-by-step pictures for iPhone and Android are in how to install a travel eSIM.

When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice

On Jio, take the ₹951 pack for a Nigeria trip of up to 10 days: 4 GB with 100 outgoing and 100 incoming minutes costs less than our 5 GB plan. On Airtel, take the ₹1,298 pack wherever our 5 GB plan costs ₹3,099 or more, such as Côte d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone or Cape Verde. A pack also suits many normal calls on your Indian number. In Togo, buy a local SIM. For a long posting in Nigeria a local line makes sense, linked to a NIN. The eSIM suits short business trips and family visits: data on landing, 30 days of validity and your Indian SIM free for OTPs. More in Jio, Airtel and Vi roaming packs compared.

Questions

Does Jio or Airtel India work in Nigeria and Ghana?

Yes. Nigeria is on all of Jio's pack lists (₹951 for 4 GB over 10 days) and Ghana on the 132-country list (₹1,499 for 2 GB over 14 days). Airtel's packs list both: ₹998 for 5 days or ₹1,298 for 10 days.

Can I use my Indian SIM in Senegal, Togo and Cape Verde?

Carefully. Jio has no regular pack in any of the three; without one, calls to India cost ₹250 a minute from Senegal. Airtel's packs cover Senegal and Cape Verde, not Togo.

Do I need a local SIM card in Nigeria, and is registration needed?

Not for a short trip if you install a travel eSIM before you fly. Nigerian SIM lines must be linked to a National Identification Number (NIN), which makes a local SIM more work for a visitor. We have no registration facts for the other countries.

Which network is best in Lagos and Accra?

We have no city-level speed data. MTN has the most subscribers in Nigeria (52%) and the most data subscriptions in Ghana (80%). Our Nigeria plan connects to MTN, Airtel and Glo, and our Ghana plan includes MTN.

Does a Nigeria eSIM work in neighbouring countries?

No, it covers Nigeria only. Our Africa plan (₹4,199 for 5 GB) covers Nigeria, Benin, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, or buy a plan per country. Togo is in no regional plan.

Can I share it as a hotspot?

Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
