East Africa safari eSIM for Indians (2026): Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Uganda, Rwanda
Which plan covers which country, why Jio is risky in Kenya and Ethiopia, and what we do and do not know about signal in the parks.
Choosing an East Africa safari eSIM for Indians comes down to three things: which countries you cross, whether your Indian SIM has a roaming pack there, and how little signal you may get in the parks. This guide compares a Jio or Airtel roaming pack, a local SIM and a travel eSIM for Kenya, Tanzania with Zanzibar, Uganda, Rwanda and Ethiopia.
Yes, an eSIM works on safari wherever its partner network has signal, but we found no reliable data on coverage inside Masai Mara, the Serengeti or the gorilla trekking forests, so plan for gaps. Our Africa plan covers Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda (not Ethiopia) at ₹2,799 for 5 GB over 30 days; a Kenya-only trip costs ₹1,399 for 5 GB. Jio has no pack for Kenya or Ethiopia, so turn data roaming off on your Indian SIM; Airtel's ₹1,298 10-day pack lists all five countries.
Which plan covers which country
| Country | eSIMKite 5 GB · 30 days | In our Africa plan? | Jio pack | Airtel packs | UPI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kenya | ₹1,399 | Yes (also Global) | Not on Jio's lists (Global Pack only) | Listed, check in the app | No |
| Tanzania, including Zanzibar | ₹1,499 | Yes (also Global) | 132-country and data-only lists | Listed, check in the app | No |
| Uganda | ₹2,799 | Yes (also Global) | 132-country list | Listed, check in the app | No |
| Rwanda | ₹2,799 | Yes (not Global) | 132-country list | Listed, check in the app | No |
| Ethiopia | ₹2,799 | No (not Global either) | Not on Jio's lists (Global Pack only) | Listed, check in the app | No |
eSIMKite prices and coverage, Jio pack lists and Airtel's covered countries, all read 21 Oct 2026; Airtel's older rate sheet puts all five in its dearer 'Set 2'. UPI: BusinessLine, 31 Aug 2026.
Regional plan or country plans
Read the coverage list on each plan card; do not assume. Our Africa plan covers Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda but not Ethiopia: ₹2,799 for 5 GB or ₹5,099 for 10 GB over 30 days. Our Global plan (₹3,099 for 5 GB) covers Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda but not Rwanda or Ethiopia. For Kenya and Tanzania only, two country plans (₹1,399 and ₹1,499) give 5 GB in each country for about the price of 5 GB shared on the Africa plan. Once Uganda or Rwanda is on the route, the Africa plan costs the same as either country's own 5 GB plan and covers Kenya and Tanzania too.

Other Kenya plans: 1 GB for 7 days is ₹299, 3 GB ₹849 and 10 GB ₹2,499 for 30 days. Skip the short versions: 5 GB for 7 days is ₹2,999, double the 30-day plan. Unlimited plans give 1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 Kbps: ₹1,999 for 7 days in Kenya and ₹3,499 in Tanzania. With hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings, 5 GB suits most 7 to 10 day trips; see how much data you need.
Roaming without a pack: what it costs
| Country | Jio data | Jio calls to India | Jio incoming calls | Airtel without a pack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kenya | about ₹10 per MB | ₹10 a min | ₹10 a min | ₹250 a min to India, ₹8 per 10 KB |
| Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia | about ₹2 per MB | ₹25 a min | ₹50 a min | ₹250 a min to India, ₹8 per 10 KB |
Jio tariff data updated 14 Oct 2026. Airtel figures from its older standard-rate sheet ('Set 2'), noted on its covered-countries list, read 21 Oct 2026.
Jio's Global Pack (₹1,101 or ₹1,102 for 28 days) covers Kenya and Ethiopia, but it is only about ₹933 of credit at these rates, under 100 MB of data in Kenya.
Park coverage reality check
We have no reliable facts on signal inside Masai Mara, the Serengeti or the gorilla trekking forests, and we will not guess. A travel eSIM uses local towers: our Kenya plan connects to Safaricom and Airtel, Tanzania to Vodacom and Airtel, Uganda to MTN and Airtel, Rwanda to Airtel and Ethiopia to Safaricom. Where they have no signal, no SIM or eSIM works.
- Download offline maps and bookings before you leave the city.
- Ask your lodge or operator whether there is Wi-Fi or signal at camp.
- If your safari crosses from Kenya into Tanzania, the Kenya plan does not cover the Tanzanian side: use the Africa plan or add a Tanzania plan.
Country by country
Kenya
Our Kenya plans connect to Safaricom and Airtel. Opensignal ranked Kenya second in Africa for average download speed in the second quarter of 2026 (28.7 Mbps); Ookla's September 2026 median is 43.07 Mbps. Safaricom sells SIMs in its shops, registered with your passport, and visitors can open a free M-PESA wallet there with a passport. Freedom House recorded a seven-hour disruption during protests on 25 June 2024; OONI tests from July to October 2026 found WhatsApp working. Bolt runs in Nairobi, Mombasa, Diani and Naivasha. Every visitor needs an approved eTA from etakenya.go.ke.
Tanzania and Zanzibar
Our Tanzania plans connect to Vodacom and Airtel and are the ones to use in Zanzibar, which is part of Tanzania; Ookla's September 2026 median is 32.41 Mbps. Jio's 132-country pack (₹1,499 for 2 GB over 14 days) works here. OONI tests from July to October 2026 found WhatsApp working, but Telegram and Signal showed interference in most tests and X appears restricted; OONI has not marked these as confirmed blocks. Bolt runs in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Arusha and Moshi. One visa covers the Mainland and Zanzibar; see visa.immigration.go.tz.
Uganda
Our Uganda plans connect to MTN and Airtel but are expensive: ₹2,799 for 5 GB and ₹4,299 for 7 days of Unlimited. Airtel's ₹1,298 10-day pack costs less than half that, and Jio's 132-country pack is ₹1,499. Freedom House (2025) says Facebook remains blocked on some mobile networks; OONI tests from July to October 2026 found WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal working. Bolt runs in Kampala, Gulu and Mbarara.
Rwanda
Our Rwanda plans use Airtel and cost ₹2,799 for 5 GB or ₹3,999 for 7 days of Unlimited. For a short gorilla trek, Airtel's ₹1,298 pack or Jio's ₹1,499 pack costs less. The Africa plan covers Rwanda; the Global plan does not. A local SIM needs biometric registration under a 2024 RURA rule. Freedom House (2025) records no social media blocking. Rwanda lists a free 30-day visa at the entry point for Commonwealth nationals, India included (migration.gov.rw).
Ethiopia
Neither our Africa plan nor our Global plan covers Ethiopia, and Jio has no pack here. Our Ethiopia plans use Safaricom: ₹649 for 1 GB over 7 days, enough for a short Addis Ababa stopover, or ₹2,799 for 5 GB. Airtel's ₹698 1-day and ₹998 5-day packs are worth comparing. Opensignal found Ethiopian users spend 26.3% of their time on 2G or 3G, the highest of 27 African markets. Freedom House's 2025 report records regional shutdowns during conflicts, including one across most Amhara cities that lasted about a year until July 2024. OONI tests in 2026 found WhatsApp working.
Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI
eSIMKite plans are data only. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone as the second line, so your number, WhatsApp and UPI apps stay as they are. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.
- Jio: the ₹1,499 pack for Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda includes 100 SMS. Kenya and Ethiopia have only the Global Pack credit, so check in MyJio how SMS are charged.
- Airtel prepaid: packs list all five countries, and the 5-day and 10-day packs include 20 SMS; the IR activation pack is ₹118 for 28 days at standard charges. Seeing 'Airtel' on screen in Kenya or Uganda does not mean your Indian Airtel plan works as at home.
- Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month include one free roaming trip a year from 8 Oct 2026; Airtel has not listed the countries.
- Vi: check in the Vi app whether you need a pack to receive SMS abroad.
- WhatsApp: OONI found it working in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia; for Rwanda we have no OONI data.
- Calls home: Jio's Wi-Fi calling packs (₹121 for 100 min, ₹521 for 500 min) work over hotel Wi-Fi if your phone supports Wi-Fi calling.
- UPI: not live in any of the five (BusinessLine, 31 Aug 2026). Carry a card or cash; in Kenya, M-PESA is an option.
Set it up at home
- Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
- Buy the Africa plan or one plan per country, and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India.
- On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
- On landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the mobile data line.
Step-by-step pictures for iPhone and Android are in how to install a travel eSIM.
When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice
In Uganda, Rwanda and Ethiopia our plans cost ₹2,799 for 5 GB, which is not good value: an Airtel user does better with the ₹1,298 10-day pack (6 GB and 200 minutes), and a Jio user in Uganda or Rwanda with the ₹1,499 pack. A roaming pack also suits you if you will make many normal calls on your Indian number. For a long stay in Kenya, price a Safaricom SIM (3.5 GB for Ksh 500 a week). The eSIM suits you when you want data on landing, one plan across four countries and your Indian SIM free for OTPs. More in Jio, Airtel and Vi roaming packs compared.
Questions
Does an eSIM work inside Masai Mara, the Serengeti and the gorilla trekking areas?
Only where a local network has signal. We have no reliable coverage data for the parks, so expect gaps, download offline maps and ask your lodge about Wi-Fi.
Does Jio or Airtel India work in Kenya and Tanzania?
Airtel's packs list both (₹1,298 for 10 days), but check in the app because its older rate sheet puts them in the dearer set. Jio works in Tanzania on its 132-country pack (₹1,499 for 14 days). Kenya is on none of Jio's pack lists.
Can I use my Indian SIM in Uganda, Rwanda and Ethiopia?
It can roam there, but price it first. Jio's 132-country pack covers Uganda and Rwanda; Ethiopia has only the Global Pack credit. Airtel's packs list all three. Keep the Indian SIM on for OTPs with its data roaming off.
Do I need a SIM card in Kenya or Tanzania?
Not if you install a travel eSIM before you fly: 5 GB for 30 days is ₹1,399 in Kenya and ₹1,499 in Tanzania. A Safaricom SIM suits a long stay in Kenya, registered in a shop with your passport.
Is one Africa regional eSIM better than country plans?
Only if Uganda or Rwanda is on your route. For Kenya and Tanzania alone, two country plans give 5 GB in each for about the Africa plan's ₹2,799. It skips Ethiopia.
Does a Kenya eSIM work in Tanzania and Uganda on a cross-border trip?
Do not count on it: each country plan covers its own country. Use the Africa plan, which covers Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, or buy a second country plan.
Which network is best in Zanzibar?
We found no independent data for Zanzibar. Our Tanzania plan, which you use there, connects to Vodacom and Airtel.
Can I share it as a hotspot?
Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
