Mauritius, Seychelles and Indian Ocean islands eSIM for Indians (2026)

Does Jio work in Mauritius? Yes, and so does UPI, but the Seychelles, Réunion and the smaller islands nearby are a different story. This guide compares a Jio or Airtel roaming pack, a local tourist SIM and a travel eSIM for each island.

Short answer

Yes, UPI works in Mauritius, and so does Jio: Mauritius is on Jio's 100-country pack at ₹951 for 4 GB with calls over 10 days, while eSIMKite's Mauritius plans cost ₹349 for 1 GB over 7 days and ₹1,399 for 5 GB over 30 days. The Seychelles is not on Jio's pack lists, so take our Seychelles plan (5 GB for ₹2,399) or a local SIM there; a Mauritius plan does not cover it. For a two-island honeymoon, our 21-country Africa plan covers both at ₹2,799 for 5 GB in total, against ₹1,399 plus ₹2,399 for a 5 GB plan on each island.

Regional plan or country plans

Read the coverage list on each plan card, because we sell two Africa plans. The 21-country Africa plan covers Mauritius, the Seychelles, Réunion and Madagascar, at ₹2,799 for 5 GB or ₹5,099 for 10 GB over 30 days. For a Mauritius and Seychelles honeymoon, one 5 GB Africa plan costs less than a 5 GB country plan on each island (₹1,399 plus ₹2,399), but the 5 GB is shared across both. Two 3 GB country plans (₹899 plus ₹1,599) also cost less and give 3 GB on each. The 35-country Africa plan (₹4,199 for 5 GB) is the one for Mayotte and Comoros, and it does not cover Mauritius. Global covers the same four at ₹6,099 for 5 GB. Réunion and Mayotte are French, but neither is on our Europe plan's list.

Other Mauritius sizes: 1 GB for 7 days is ₹349, and 10 GB is ₹2,499 for 30 days. Unlimited plans give 1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 Kbps: in Mauritius ₹1,699 for 5 days and ₹2,399 for 7 days, in the Seychelles ₹3,499 for 7 days. Skip short versions in the Seychelles: 5 GB for 7 days is ₹2,999, more than 5 GB for 30 days. Indian package-tour visitors to Mauritius stayed 5.4 nights on average in 2025 (Statistics Mauritius), so with good resort Wi-Fi, 3 GB often covers transfers, maps and day trips.

Island by island

Mauritius

Our Mauritius plans connect to my.t and Emtel. 3G is being switched off (ICTA, May 2026), so use a 4G or 5G phone. Both operators sell a €30 tourist SIM with 30 days of unlimited 5G data under fair use; my.t's is at the Telecom Shop in SSR International Airport, and its airport Digital Kiosk issues eSIMs. Before you fly, fill the free All-in-One Travel Digital Form at safemauritius.govmu.org, no earlier than 15 days before arrival; it is checked at boarding. Indian passport holders need no visa (Passport and Immigration Office, 2025). India sent 52% of Mauritius's honeymooners in 2025.

Seychelles

Our Seychelles plans use Airtel Seychelles, which markets a 4G/LTE network and does not advertise 5G. CWS runs 5G in parts of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, but says Samsung 5G phones cannot use it yet. A CWS starter pack is SCR 100 at CWS centres, including the airport booth. You can also buy a SIM or eSIM while applying for the Travel Authorisation and collect it at the airport kiosk. UPI is not live: NPCI and the Central Bank of Seychelles signed an agreement in June 2026. Children under 18 cannot register a SIM in their own name.

Seychelles Travel Authorisation. Every visitor needs one from the Seychelles Electronic Border System, applied for within 30 days before arrival; Standard costs €10 (24 hours). If you land without one, you apply on your own phone with your own card before immigration, possibly with a penalty fee, so have data working when you land.

Réunion

Our Réunion plans use Orange: 5 GB for 30 days is ₹399 and Unlimited is ₹599 for 7 days. A Mauritius plan does not work here. Jio has no pack or listed rates for Réunion; Airtel's packs cover it (as 'Reunion Island'), but its older rate sheet puts it in the dearer set, so check in the app. UPI is not live.

Mayotte

Our Mayotte plans use Orange: 5 GB for 30 days is ₹399, and Unlimited plans slow to 1 Mbps after the daily 1 GB. Mayotte is in our 35-country Africa plan but not the Global plan. Neither Jio nor Airtel has a pack for it, and UPI is not live.

Comoros

Comoros costs more: 3 GB for 30 days is ₹2,099 and 5 GB is ₹3,599. The 35-country Africa plan also covers it (₹4,199 for 5 GB). Jio has no pack or listed rates for Comoros and Airtel's packs do not cover it, so a travel eSIM or a local SIM is the realistic choice. UPI is not live.

Madagascar

Our Madagascar plans use Airtel and Telma; 5 GB for 30 days is ₹1,499. Opensignal ranked Madagascar second in Africa for mobile download speed in early 2026 and fifth in the second quarter. Seeing 'Airtel' on screen there does not mean your Indian Airtel plan works as at home: you still need an Indian Airtel roaming pack. Jio covers it only through its Global Pack credit; pay-as-you-go data costs about ₹586 per MB. UPI is not live.

British Indian Ocean Territory

We list it, but it is not a holiday option. UK travel advice says the territory 'is not a tourist destination': there are no commercial flights, access is restricted and you need a permit before you travel. Jio and Airtel packs do not cover it.

UPI and RuPay in Mauritius

UPI was launched in Mauritius on 12 February 2024, and Mauritius was still on the August 2026 list of countries where Indian UPI apps can pay merchants. We could not confirm from an official source how widely shops accept it, or whether RuPay cards work, so carry a Visa or Mastercard too.

Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI

eSIMKite plans are data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, so your number, WhatsApp and UPI apps stay as they are. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.

Jio: the ₹951 pack works in Mauritius and includes 25 SMS. In the Seychelles and Madagascar only Jio's Global Pack (₹1,101 or ₹1,102, about ₹933 of credit for 28 days) applies; Réunion, Mayotte and Comoros have no Jio rates listed. Check in MyJio.
Airtel prepaid: packs cover Mauritius, the Seychelles, Réunion and Madagascar, not Mayotte or Comoros. They include 20 SMS; the IR activation pack is ₹118 for 28 days at standard charges.
Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month include one free roaming trip a year from 8 Oct 2026. Airtel has not listed the countries, so confirm in the app.
Vi: check in the Vi app whether you need a roaming pack to receive SMS abroad.
WhatsApp calls: OONI tests found no confirmed block in the Seychelles, Réunion or Madagascar. For Mauritius we found no official rule either way, so test a call when you land.
UPI: works in Mauritius. Not live in the Seychelles, Réunion, Mayotte, Comoros or Madagascar, so carry a card, forex card or cash.

Avoid bill shock. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹10 per MB in Mauritius and ₹586 per MB in Madagascar, and ₹250 a minute for calls to India from the Seychelles (Jio, 14 Oct 2026). Turn data roaming off for your Indian SIM.

Set it up at home

Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
Buy a plan for each island, or one regional plan that lists them all, and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India.
On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
On landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the mobile data line.

When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice

Take Jio's ₹951 pack or Airtel's ₹1,298 pack if you will make many normal calls on your Indian number in Mauritius. Take the €30 tourist SIM from my.t or Emtel for a stay of over a week or heavy video use: 30 days of unlimited data is far better value than our 30-day Unlimited plan (₹8,799). In the Seychelles, a local SIM booked with your Travel Authorisation suits a long stay. On a resort honeymoon where you rarely leave the hotel, resort Wi-Fi plus a small plan for transfers may be enough. Questions

Does Jio work in Mauritius, and what about Airtel?

Yes. Mauritius is on Jio's 75-, 100- and 132-country lists: ₹589 buys 1 GB for a day and ₹951 buys 4 GB with calls for 10 days. Airtel's packs cover it too (₹998 for 5 days, ₹1,298 for 10), but check the pack applies in the app.

Can I use my Indian SIM in Mauritius and the Seychelles?

In Mauritius, yes, with a Jio or Airtel pack. In the Seychelles Airtel's packs apply, but Jio has only its Global Pack credit. Either way, keep the Indian SIM on for OTPs and use an eSIM or local SIM for data.

Do I need a SIM card in Mauritius if my resort has Wi-Fi?

Not always. If you stay in the resort most days, its Wi-Fi may be enough, and a small plan covers transfers and day trips: 1 GB for 7 days is ₹349 and 3 GB for 30 days is ₹899.

Can I use UPI or RuPay in Mauritius?

UPI, yes: it launched there in February 2024 and was still listed in August 2026. We could not confirm RuPay acceptance from an official source, so carry a Visa or Mastercard.

Does a Mauritius eSIM work in Réunion or the Seychelles?

No. A country plan covers only its own country. Buy the Réunion plan (₹399 for 5 GB) or the Seychelles plan (₹2,399), or one regional plan for all three: our 21-country Africa plan (₹2,799 for 5 GB) and our Global plan both cover Mauritius, Réunion and the Seychelles.

Do I need a Travel Authorisation for the Seychelles, and does the eSIM work there?

Which network is best in Mauritius, and is there signal on Rodrigues?

We found no independent ranking: Ookla's September 2026 index lists none for Mauritius. Our plans use both my.t and Emtel. We also found no independent coverage data for Rodrigues or the Seychelles' outer islands, so download offline maps. ICTA lists free public Wi-Fi zones in Rodrigues as well as Mauritius, mostly at public sites.

Can I share it as a hotspot?

Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
