Maldives eSIM for Indians (2026): does Jio work, and do you need data on a resort island?
Whether you need mobile data on a Maldives resort, what Jio and Airtel charge there, and how to keep bank OTPs reaching your Indian number.
On a Maldives trip you may spend most days on resort Wi-Fi, so the real question is what you need for the rest: landing, transfers, Malé and local islands. The options are an Airtel roaming pack (Jio has none for the Maldives), an Ooredoo tourist SIM at Malé airport, a travel eSIM installed at home, or the resort's Wi-Fi alone.
You do not need an eSIM in the Maldives if you will stay at one resort and its Wi-Fi is enough for you, but Jio has no roaming pack there, so Jio users who want mobile data need a travel eSIM or a local SIM. eSIMKite's Maldives plans connect to Dhiraagu and cost ₹1,199 for 1 GB over 7 days, or ₹2,699 for 3 GB and ₹3,899 for 5 GB over 30 days. Airtel users can pay less: Airtel's 10-day pack is ₹1,298 for 6 GB with 200 minutes, so check in the Airtel Thanks app that it applies first.

Bigger plans also run for 30 days: 10 GB is ₹7,099 and 20 GB is ₹11,899. Unlimited plans give 1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 Kbps: ₹2,899 for 3 days, ₹4,599 for 5 days, ₹6,399 for 7 days, ₹8,799 for 10 days, ₹13,199 for 15 days and ₹24,299 for 30 days. Our Maldives plans cost more per GB than most destinations we sell, so size the plan to the days you will spend away from Wi-Fi.
How much data you need
| Your trip | Typical use | Pick |
|---|---|---|
| 4 to 5 nights at one resort: messages and maps on arrival and transfers, Wi-Fi at the resort | under 0.2 GB a day | 1 GB, ₹1,199 for 7 days |
| 7 to 10 days with Malé or a local-island guesthouse, plus Instagram | about 0.5 GB a day | 3 GB, ₹2,699, or 5 GB, ₹3,899 |
| Video calls every day, or a hotspot for family | 1 GB a day or more | 10 GB, ₹7,099, or Unlimited, ₹6,399 for 7 days |

Resort island vs local island trips
On a resort island, the resort's Wi-Fi is a fair alternative to mobile data. If you will spend most of the trip at one resort and mainly need WhatsApp and photo uploads, Wi-Fi may be all you need. We found no official source on resort Wi-Fi quality or charges, so ask your resort before you go, and think about a small plan for landing and transfers in case the Wi-Fi does not cover everything you need.
On a local island or in Malé, you are more likely to need your own data, for ferry times, taxis and guesthouse directions. Velana airport recommends the RTL Travel App for the national public ferry and bus network, with timetables and digital tickets, and OdiApp for speedboat schedules, charters and ferry seats across Malé and the outer atolls. For taxis in Malé and Hulhumalé it lists Avas Ride, Nala Taxi App and Malé Taxi Line. Speedboat timings depend on marine weather, so check them on the day. The public ferry from the airport to Malé runs every 15 minutes from 05:30 to midnight, costs MVR 15 and takes cash or card.
Networks and coverage in the Maldives
The Maldives has two mobile operators, Dhiraagu and Ooredoo Maldives, and eSIMKite's Maldives plans connect to Dhiraagu. Ooredoo says its own network covers all major islands, resorts, local islands and guesthouses; that is the operator's statement, not an independent test. We could not find an independent comparison to quote either: Ookla's Speedtest Global Index for September 2026 shows no mobile ranking for the Maldives. If signal on a particular island matters to you, ask your resort or guesthouse which network works best there.
Two rules from the Communications Authority of Maldives: foreigners can hold at most 3 mobile numbers per operator, under a regulation in force since 24 August 2023, and transmitting equipment above 100 mW, such as walkie-talkies, needs inspection and approval. Ordinary phones are not mentioned.
Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI
eSIMKite plans are data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, so your number, WhatsApp and UPI apps stay as they are. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.
- Jio: the Maldives is not on any of Jio's current roaming pack lists. Without a pack, data costs about ₹586 per MB, calls to India ₹150 a minute and incoming calls ₹75 a minute. Jio's Global Pack (₹1,101 or ₹1,102) gives ₹933 of roaming credit for 28 days and has the Maldives on its older country list. Check in MyJio how your plan handles SMS abroad.
- Airtel prepaid: the Maldives is on Airtel's covered-countries list, and the 5-day (₹998) and 10-day (₹1,298) packs include 20 SMS. Airtel's older rate sheet puts the Maldives in its dearer rate set, so check in the Airtel Thanks app that the pack applies before you buy.
- Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month include one free roaming trip a year from 8 Oct 2026, with 5 GB, 60 minutes and free incoming SMS for 5 days. The countries are not listed, so check the app.
- Vi: check in the Vi app whether you need a pack to receive SMS abroad.
- WhatsApp and calls home: WhatsApp messages and calls go over data, on the eSIM or on Wi-Fi, and keep your Indian number. Jio's Wi-Fi calling packs, ₹121 for 100 minutes or ₹521 for 500, cover normal calls to India over Wi-Fi if your phone supports Wi-Fi calling; check in MyJio that they work from the Maldives.
- UPI: the Maldives was not among the places with live UPI merchant payments on 31 August 2026, so carry a card or a forex card. The currency is the rufiyaa (MVR).
Before you land
- IMUGA Traveller Declaration: every traveller must submit it free on the official IMUGA portal within 96 hours before the arrival flight. Each traveller, children included, needs their own, and children need their own passports. Velana airport asks for one within 96 hours of your departure flight too. The portal warns that some websites charge for the form.
- Visa: Indian tourists get a visa on arrival with no pre-approval if they have a machine-readable passport valid for at least 1 month, a confirmed return ticket, a prepaid booking at a registered facility, enough funds and the IMUGA declaration (Maldives Immigration, read 20 Oct 2026).
- At the airport: Ooredoo sells tourist SIMs and eSIMs in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at Velana International Airport, and through partner hotels and guesthouses.
- Apps: if you are heading to Malé or a local island, download the RTL Travel App, OdiApp and a taxi app at home.
Set it up at home
- Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
- Buy the Maldives plan and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India.
- On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
- On landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the mobile data line.
Step-by-step pictures for iPhone and Android are in how to install a travel eSIM. If the resort Wi-Fi turns out to be enough, you can leave the eSIM line off for a few days.
When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice
Pick Airtel's roaming pack if you are on Airtel prepaid and it applies in the app: ₹1,298 for 10 days with 6 GB and 200 minutes costs less than our 5 GB plan at ₹3,899, and you keep normal calls on your Indian number. Airtel postpaid users on the new plans may have a free roaming trip to use. Pick an Ooredoo tourist SIM at the airport if you want a Maldivian number: plans come as an eSIM or a physical SIM, start automatically once inserted or downloaded and go up to 100 GB, and international calls are pay as you go. We could not read Ooredoo's prices, so compare them at the counter.
If you will stay put at a resort with Wi-Fi, you may not need mobile data at all, and Jio's Wi-Fi calling packs can cover calls to India. A travel eSIM makes most sense for Jio users and anyone whose pack does not cover the Maldives, who want data from the moment they land, set up at home, with the Indian SIM kept for OTPs. Questions
Does Jio work in the Maldives?
Only at pay-as-you-go rates, which are steep: the Maldives is not on any of Jio's current pack lists, and Jio charges about ₹586 per MB of data, ₹150 a minute for calls to India and ₹75 a minute for incoming calls. Jio's Global Pack gives ₹933 of roaming credit for 28 days, not a data allowance. Most Jio users will want a travel eSIM, a local SIM or Wi-Fi.
Can I use my Indian SIM in the Maldives?
Yes, for SMS OTPs and calls, if your plan allows roaming. Airtel has packs for the Maldives, ₹998 for 5 days with 4 GB and ₹1,298 for 10 days with 6 GB, which cost less than our plans for similar data; check in the Airtel Thanks app that they apply. Either way, keep data roaming off on the Indian SIM unless you have a pack.
Do I need a SIM card in the Maldives, and can I buy one at Malé airport?
Not if resort Wi-Fi is enough, or if you install a travel eSIM or buy a roaming pack before you fly. If you want one, Ooredoo sells tourist SIMs and eSIMs in both terminals at Velana International Airport, with plans up to 100 GB; check prices at the counter.
Do resorts give free Wi-Fi, or do I need mobile data?
We found no official source on resort Wi-Fi quality or charges, so ask your resort. Resort Wi-Fi is a fair alternative if you stay put, while mobile data helps on landing, on transfers, in Malé and on local islands. A small plan, such as 1 GB for 7 days at ₹1,199, covers those gaps.
Dhiraagu or Ooredoo for resort islands?
We could not find an independent comparison, and Ookla shows no mobile ranking for the Maldives. Ooredoo says its network covers all major islands, resorts, local islands and guesthouses, and our eSIM uses Dhiraagu. Ask your resort which network works best on its island.
Does UPI work in the Maldives?
Not as far as we can confirm: the Maldives was not among the places with live UPI merchant payments on 31 August 2026. Carry a card or a forex card. The public airport ferry to Malé takes cash or card.
Can I share it as a hotspot?
Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
