Most Indian travellers to Bali pick one of three options: switch on a Jio or Airtel roaming pack, buy a local SIM after landing, or install a travel eSIM before leaving home. Here is how they compare on price and effort, which forms to fill before you fly, and how to keep bank OTPs reaching your Indian number.

Short answer

For a 7 to 10 day Bali trip, a 5 GB eSIM costs ₹499 on eSIMKite and lasts 30 days. Jio's 10-day pack is ₹951 for 4 GB and Airtel's is ₹1,298 for 6 GB. Keep your Indian SIM on as a second line so bank OTPs still reach you, and fill in All Indonesia and pay the Love Bali levy before you fly.

More sizes are on the Bali plans page. 1 GB for 7 days is ₹149, and the 30-day plans run from 3 GB at ₹349 to 20 GB at ₹1,399 and 50 GB at ₹2,899. Unlimited gives 1 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps: ₹449 for 3 days, ₹649 for 5 days, ₹1,299 for 10 days, ₹1,899 for 15 days and ₹3,499 for 30 days. Pick the 30-day version of a size: on the same page, 5 GB for 7 days is ₹2,999, against ₹499 for 30 days. A local SIM is not in the table because we could not confirm a current Bali airport price from an official source.

Networks and speed in Bali

The eSIMKite Bali eSIM connects to Indonesian networks Telkomsel, Indosat, XL and 3. Your phone picks the strongest one where you are, so you are not tied to a single operator's coverage.

Ookla's Speedtest Global Index for September 2026 puts Indonesia's average mobile download speed at 91.18 Mbps, 81st in the world. That figure covers the whole country, not just Bali, so treat it as a rough guide. It is a good reason to leave large photo and video backups for your hotel or villa Wi-Fi, especially on a smaller plan.

We have not quoted operator-by-operator rankings, or coverage for particular places such as Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud or Nusa Penida, because we could not confirm current figures from an independent source. With four networks to use, the eSIM is not limited to one operator's map.

Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI

A travel eSIM is data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, so your number, bank SMS and WhatsApp account stay as they are. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.

  • Jio: the ₹951 10-day pack includes 25 SMS and the ₹589 1-day pack includes 20. If you skip a pack, check in the MyJio app how SMS works on your plan abroad.
  • Airtel prepaid: the ₹998 and ₹1,298 packs include 20 SMS. Airtel's ₹118 roaming activation pack lasts 28 days at standard charges; check SMS costs in the Airtel Thanks app before you fly.
  • Airtel postpaid: the free roaming trip on Airtel's new postpaid plans, from 8 October 2026, includes free incoming SMS.
  • Vi: we had no current Vi roaming figures for this guide, so check in the Vi app whether you need a pack to receive SMS abroad.
  • WhatsApp and calling apps: Freedom House's 2025 report on Indonesia found no blocked social media. It records a brief block of one website in May 2025, but no blocks on messaging or calling apps, so WhatsApp, FaceTime and Telegram calls have no known restrictions.
  • UPI: Indonesia was not among the countries where Indian UPI apps could pay merchants as of 31 August 2026, so carry a card or forex card.
  • Paying online before you go: the Love Bali levy can be paid by bank transfer, virtual account or QRIS on the official site, and Indonesia's e-visa portal takes credit cards directly, with no agent or sponsor needed.
  • Cash: Customs says travellers carrying cash or payment instruments worth IDR 100 million or more must declare them.
Avoid bill shock. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹2 per MB of data in Indonesia and ₹2 a minute for calls, incoming calls included. Turn data roaming off for your Indian SIM, and choose the eSIM as your mobile data line.

Before you land in Bali

Indonesia uses one online arrival declaration, All Indonesia (allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id), which covers immigration, customs, health and quarantine. You can fill it in from 3 days before arrival. Customs says every passenger arriving by air or sea must submit the customs declaration through it and save the QR code to scan at the terminal, so keep a screenshot of the QR code in case your data is slow at the airport.

Customs also says phones and tablets brought from abroad must have their IMEI registered to get access to Indonesian mobile networks. Registration is free: declare your phone on All Indonesia, or use the online form on Customs' IMEI page. Personal goods have a USD 500 duty-free allowance per passenger.

Bali also charges every foreign tourist, Indians included, a tourist levy of IDR 150,000. Pay it on the official Love Bali site or in the Love Bali app with your name, email, passport number, country and arrival date, and a QR Levy Voucher is emailed to you. Exemptions are requested through the site's Apply Exemption page.

For visa rules, check Indonesia's official e-visa portal, evisa.imigrasi.go.id, which Immigration said on 12 October 2026 takes credit cards directly, with no agent or sponsor needed.

  • All Indonesia for the arrival declaration. If you go on to Jakarta, since 16 October 2026 you can also book Whoosh high-speed train tickets to Bandung through it.
  • Love Bali for the tourist levy, or use the website instead.
  • Install both at home on Wi-Fi, and save your All Indonesia QR code and your levy voucher to your phone before you fly.

Set it up at home

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
  2. Buy the Bali plan and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India. It takes about two minutes.
  3. Leave the eSIM line off until you land. The plan starts counting when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy it.
  4. After landing in Bali, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the line for mobile data.

When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice

A travel eSIM is not always the right pick. If you will make many normal calls on your Indian number, a Jio or Airtel pack includes 100 to 200 minutes and a data eSIM has none; Jio also lists ₹2 a minute for calls to India from Indonesia without a pack. If you are on one of Airtel's new postpaid plans, the free trip gives 5 GB and 60 minutes for 5 days once a year, though Airtel's release does not list the countries, so check the app first. For a stay longer than 30 days, or if you need an Indonesian phone number, a local SIM makes more sense, as long as your phone's IMEI is registered with Customs first. We could not confirm free public Wi-Fi at Bali airport from an official source, so do not plan on it.

Questions

Does WhatsApp work on a Bali eSIM?

Yes. WhatsApp messages and calls go over data, and Freedom House's 2025 report on Indonesia found no blocks on messaging or calling apps. Your WhatsApp account keeps your Indian number.

Will I still get OTPs from my Indian bank in Bali?

Yes, if your Indian SIM stays switched on as the second line. Jio and Airtel roaming packs include SMS, and Airtel's free postpaid trip includes free incoming SMS. If you skip a pack, check your operator's app before you fly.

Is Jio or Airtel roaming cheaper than an eSIM for Bali?

For data, no. Jio's 10-day pack is ₹951 for 4 GB and Airtel's is ₹1,298 for 6 GB, while the 5 GB eSIM is ₹499, about ₹100 per GB, and lasts 30 days. A roaming pack makes sense if you need many normal calls.

Which network does the eSIM use in Bali?

Telkomsel, Indosat, XL and 3. Your phone picks the strongest one where you are.

Can I share the eSIM as a hotspot?

Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.

Do Indian tourists pay the Bali tourist levy?

Yes. The levy is IDR 150,000 per foreign tourist, and Indian tourists pay it like everyone else. Pay it on the official Love Bali site or app before you fly, and keep the QR voucher it emails you.

Can I pay with UPI in Bali?

Not at shops. Indonesia was not on the August 2026 list of countries where UPI merchant payments are live, so carry a card or forex card. The levy can be paid online by bank transfer, and the e-visa by credit card.
