Morocco and North Africa eSIM for Indians (2026): Tunisia, Algeria

One Global plan or a plan per country for North Africa, what each option misses, and why data roaming on your Indian SIM must stay off.

Choosing a Morocco eSIM for Indians heading to Marrakech, Fes or the Sahara starts with one fact: Jio has no regular roaming pack for Morocco or Tunisia, so a careless setting on your Indian SIM can cost thousands. The real choice is between an Airtel pack, a local SIM bought in a shop, or a travel eSIM installed at home, and Algeria and Western Sahara follow different rules again.

Short answer

For Morocco alone, our Morocco 5 GB plan costs ₹849 for 30 days, against ₹998 for Airtel's 5-day pack (4 GB), and Jio has no regular roaming pack for Morocco or Tunisia. If Tunisia or Algeria is on the route, the Global 5 GB plan (₹1,499, 30 days) covers all three in one eSIM, but no regional plan covers Western Sahara. Whatever you choose, turn data roaming off on your Indian SIM: without a pack, Jio charges about ₹2 per MB in Morocco and about ₹586 per MB in Tunisia.

The real risk is your Indian SIM. Morocco and Tunisia are on none of Jio's regular pack lists. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹2 per MB of data, ₹25 a minute for calls to India and ₹50 a minute for incoming calls in Morocco. In Tunisia it is about ₹586 per MB, ₹150 a minute to India and ₹75 a minute incoming, so a few MB used in the background can cost more than a whole 5 GB eSIM plan. Turn data roaming off for the Indian SIM before you fly.

Morocco plans also come as 1 GB for 7 days (₹199) and as 3 GB (₹599), 10 GB (₹1,499), 20 GB (₹2,599) or 50 GB (₹5,299) for 30 days. Unlimited, 1 GB a day at full speed then 512 Kbps, is ₹699 for 3 days, ₹2,099 for 10 and ₹5,599 for 30. Short plans cost more: 5 GB for 7 days is ₹1,799, over twice the 30-day price. In Tunisia and Algeria, 10 GB for 30 days is ₹1,299.

Running low? You can request a top-up for the same eSIM from the top-up page, and we email you a payment link. If you will use video or social media every day, start with the bigger plan.

Regional plan or country plans: read the coverage list

Each regional plan has its own country list on the plan card, and the lists differ even inside one region. On 21 October 2026, Global 5 GB (₹1,499) and 10 GB (₹2,599) covered Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. Middle East & North Africa (5 GB ₹1,799, 10 GB ₹3,199, 7 days of Unlimited ₹3,199) covered Morocco and Tunisia but not Algeria. Africa (5 GB ₹2,799, 10 GB ₹5,099, 7 days of Unlimited ₹7,099) covered all three. No regional plan covered Western Sahara.

For Morocco plus Tunisia, two country plans (₹849 and ₹749) give 10 GB in all for a little more than one Global 5 GB plan, but you install two eSIMs. With Algeria too, Global is the simplest single eSIM; Africa costs more for the same three countries. Plans and their lists are on the Global eSIM page.

Country by country

Morocco

Our Morocco plans connect to Orange Morocco. The three operators are close in size: inwi had 34.12% of lines, Orange 33.59% and Maroc Telecom 32.29% at the end of 2025 (regulator ANRT). All three launched 5G on 7 November 2025, and Orange said more than a hundred cities had it at launch. Ookla puts the median mobile download at 68.41 Mbps (68th in the world, September 2026). inwi sells eSIM packs from 120 DH in its shops, and Orange sells eSIM plans online (bank card only) or in its shops; neither mentions airport counters or tourist offers. Freedom on the Net 2025 reports no blocking of WhatsApp or other call apps. Bolt lists only one Moroccan city, Marrakesh. For the e-Visa, check the official portal, acces-maroc.ma.

Tunisia

Our Tunisia plans connect to Ooredoo and Orange. The regulator INT counted about 15.0 million mobile lines in Q2 2026: Ooredoo 6.58 million, Tunisie Telecom 4.47 million, Orange 3.91 million. INT dates the 5G launch to February 2025, and Ookla puts the median download at 49.01 Mbps (80th, September 2026). Ooredoo's Holiday SIM, also sold as an eSIM, is 15 DT for 3.5 GB over 15 days or 30 DT for 10 GB over 30 days, with minutes. Pre-order it online with your passport number and arrival date; the form lists Tunis-Carthage and Djerba-Zarzis airports and asks you to pick a collection shop. Freedom on the Net 2025 gives Tunisia full marks on blocking or filtering content, and INT says WhatsApp and Messenger calls are replacing ordinary calls.

Algeria

Our Algeria plans connect to Ooredoo, Djezzy and Mobilis, the country's three operators, and Ookla puts the median download at 77.67 Mbps (59th, September 2026). Algeria is the only member on a regular Jio list: the 132-country pack is ₹1,499 for 14 days (2 GB, 100 minutes, 100 SMS) and the data-only pack is ₹599 for 7 days (1 GB). We also list Unlimited plans with no daily cap, from ₹1,699 for 1 day. Messaging apps get blocked during national exams: Access Now says Algeria kept up this yearly practice in 2025. We cannot promise that any eSIM gets around it, so if your dates overlap the exams, rely on SMS and normal calls on your Indian SIM.

Western Sahara

eSIMKite lists Western Sahara as a separate destination with 9 plans of its own, and they are expensive: ₹2,599 for 1 GB over 7 days and ₹11,599 for 5 GB over 30 days. Our listing names no network, and none of our regional plans include it. We cannot confirm that a Morocco plan works there, so do not assume it does. Neither Jio nor Airtel names Western Sahara on its pack lists, and Jio's rate lookup returned no rates for it on 21 October 2026, so Indian roaming there is unconfirmed. Freedom House's Morocco report does not cover it, so we have no information on app rules there.

Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI

A travel eSIM is data only. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone as the second line, so your number, WhatsApp account and bank SMS stay with it. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.

  • Jio: Morocco and Tunisia are pay-as-you-go: SMS cost ₹25 each, and incoming calls ₹50 a minute in Morocco and ₹75 in Tunisia. Check in the MyJio app what receiving SMS costs. In Algeria, the ₹1,499 pack includes 100 SMS.
  • Airtel prepaid: packs cover all three countries, from ₹698 for 1 day. Check in the Airtel Thanks app whether you need the ₹118 activation pack (28 days, standard charges) to receive SMS abroad.
  • Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month include one free 5-day roaming trip a year with free incoming SMS (since 8 October 2026). Airtel has not listed the countries.
  • Vi: check the roaming and SMS rules for your plan in the Vi app.
  • WhatsApp: Freedom on the Net 2025 reports no call-app blocking in Morocco and gives Tunisia full marks on content blocking. Algeria blocks messaging apps during national exams, so SMS is the safer channel for OTPs then.
  • UPI: merchant payments were not live in Morocco, Tunisia or Algeria on 31 August 2026, so carry a card or forex card.
Avoid bill shock. Keep data roaming off on your Indian SIM unless you have a pack for the country you are in, and set the eSIM as your mobile data line. Jio's Global Pack is credit, not data.

Set it up at home

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
  2. Buy a country plan, or the Global plan for Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria together, and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India. It takes about two minutes.
  3. On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
  4. After landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the line for mobile data.

Step-by-step pictures for iPhone and Android are in how to install a travel eSIM.

When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice

Choose Airtel if you will make many normal calls on your Indian number: in all three countries the ₹1,298 pack gives 6 GB and 200 minutes over 10 days. In Algeria, Jio users can buy the ₹1,499 pack (2 GB, 100 minutes, 14 days). If you mostly call India over Wi-Fi, Jio's Wi-Fi calling packs cost ₹121 for 100 minutes or ₹521 for 500 minutes, if your phone supports it. Skip Jio's Global Pack for data: ₹1,101 buys only about ₹933 of credit.

Choose a local SIM for a long stay or a local number. In Tunisia, Ooredoo's Holiday SIM goes up to 40 GB for 60 DT over 30 days, with local minutes, and you can pre-order it. In Morocco, inwi and Orange sell eSIMs in their shops but list no airport counter or tourist offer, so you are offline until you find a shop. A travel eSIM installed at home works as soon as you land, which matters for the airport taxi or a Sahara pick-up.

Questions

Does Jio work in Morocco?

Only on pay-as-you-go or the Global Pack. Morocco is on none of Jio's regular pack lists, so there is no Jio data pack for it. The Global Pack (₹1,101 or ₹1,102 for 28 days) is about ₹933 of credit at standard rates, and data without a pack costs about ₹2 per MB. Tunisia is the same; Algeria is on Jio's 132-country and data-only lists.

Can I use my Indian SIM in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria?

Yes, but watch the cost. Airtel's packs cover all three, from ₹698 for 1 day, while Jio users in Morocco and Tunisia pay pay-as-you-go rates. Keep the Indian SIM on as the second line for OTPs, with its data roaming off.

Do I need a SIM card in Morocco, and do tourists have to register one?

No physical SIM card is needed: a travel eSIM installed at home gives you data when you land. We could not confirm Morocco's registration rules for tourist SIMs. inwi and Orange sell eSIMs in their shops, and Orange also online with a bank card; neither mentions an airport counter.

Which network is best for Sahara tours?

We have no coverage data for the desert routes, so we cannot name one. Our Morocco plans use Orange Morocco, one of three operators of similar size. Download offline maps and your tour details before you leave town.

Does a Morocco eSIM work in Western Sahara?

Do not assume it does. eSIMKite lists Western Sahara as a separate destination with its own plans, from ₹2,599 for 1 GB, and none of our regional plans include it. Read the coverage list on the plan card before you pay.

Is Tunisia covered by the same plan?

The Morocco plan is sold for Morocco. For both on one eSIM, the Global plans (from ₹1,499) and the Middle East & North Africa plans (from ₹1,799) cover Morocco and Tunisia. A separate Tunisia plan is ₹749 for 5 GB over 30 days.

Will OTPs arrive on my Indian SIM?

Yes, if the Indian SIM stays switched on as the second line and can receive SMS while roaming. Check in your operator's app what that costs, especially on Jio in Morocco and Tunisia. During Algeria's exam-time app blocks, SMS is the safer channel.

Can I share the eSIM as a hotspot?

Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
