Spain and Portugal eSIM for Indians (2026): plus Andorra, Gibraltar and the Canaries

A Spain and Portugal eSIM for Indians has to answer one question first: does one Europe plan cover your whole route, or is a plan for each country better? A Jio or Airtel roaming pack and a local prepaid SIM are the other options, and Andorra, Gibraltar and the Canary Islands are not on every plan.

Which plan covers which country

One Europe plan or country plans: read the coverage list on each plan card

Each regional plan has its own country list, shown on the plan card before you pay. On 21 October 2026, the Europe 5 GB (₹499) and 10 GB (₹999) plans, each for 30 days across 33 countries, covered Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar, but not Andorra or the Canary Islands. Europe Unlimited (₹1,399 for 7 days, 37 countries) covered Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands, but not Andorra or Gibraltar. The 100-country Global plans (₹1,499 for 5 GB, ₹2,599 for 10 GB) matched the Europe 5 GB list here. Only the 107-country Global plans covered Andorra, from ₹6,099 for 5 GB, and they missed the Canary Islands. No plan covered all five, and lists can change, so check on the day you buy.

For Spain and Portugal together, one Europe 5 GB plan at ₹499 costs less than two country plans at ₹399 each. For Spain alone, the country plan costs less: 10 GB is ₹749 against ₹999, and 7 days of Unlimited is ₹599 against ₹1,399. For Andorra or the Canaries, add that place's own plan. Prices side by side

In Spain and Portugal, country plans start at 1 GB for 7 days for ₹99. Other 30-day sizes are 3 GB for ₹299, 10 GB for ₹749 and 20 GB for ₹1,399, and 50 GB is ₹2,899 in Spain or ₹3,299 in Portugal. Unlimited plans give 1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 Kbps: ₹299 for 3 days, ₹449 for 5, ₹599 for 7, ₹849 for 10, ₹1,299 for 15 and ₹2,299 for 30. Short plans cost more: 5 GB for 7 days is ₹649, against ₹399 for 30 days. See the Spain and Portugal pages.

Spain and Portugal, country by country

Spain

Our Spain plan connects to Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Yoigo, and Ookla puts the median mobile download at 88.11 Mbps (53rd in the world, September 2026). Vodafone Spain's prepaid S plan is EUR 10 for 28 days with 500 minutes and 90 GB, including a 30 GB promotion, of which 15 GB works in the EU and UK. Vodafone also sells data-only plans for visitors online. At Madrid-Barajas, the free 'Airport Free Wifi Aena' network asks only for an email address, which you confirm within 15 minutes, and then has no time limit. One thing to know: 18% of people in Spain find it hard to get cash (ECB), so carry a card.

Portugal

Our Portugal plan connects to MEO, NOS and Vodafone; the median download is 130.91 Mbps (Ookla, 31st), faster than Spain's. Vodafone Portugal sells a data-only 'eSIM Portugal & Europe' online for visitors: EUR 20 for 15 days with unlimited data in Portugal, or EUR 35 and EUR 55 for 30 days, delivered by email and valid from activation, with no calls or SMS. Its EU and UK data amounts are listed inconsistently. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹5 per MB here, against about ₹2 in Spain. One thing to know: 47% of people in Portugal cancel a cash withdrawal when the ATM shows a fee, the highest share in the euro area (ECB), which suggests fee-charging ATMs are common.

Andorra, Gibraltar and the Canary Islands

Andorra and Gibraltar are outside the EU's Roam like at home zone, so an EU SIM or a Europe eSIM may charge extra or not work there unless its list names them. The Canary Islands are part of Spain, but they sit on different eSIMKite plans from the mainland.

Andorra

Andorra is on none of our Europe plans. Our Andorra plan lists Mobiland as its network and costs ₹399 for 1 GB over 7 days or ₹1,599 for 5 GB over 30 days; Unlimited is ₹949 for 3 days. Jio's packs do cover Andorra, which is on all of Jio's lists, so for a day trip from Spain, Jio's ₹589 1-day pack (1 GB, 100 minutes) or Airtel's ₹698 1-day pack is a fair choice. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹10 per MB and ₹10 a minute. Andorra issues no visas and is reached only through France or Spain, so Indians need a double- or multiple-entry Schengen visa (Government of Andorra).

Gibraltar

Gibraltar is on our Europe 5 GB and 10 GB plans and the Global plans, but not on Europe Unlimited. Our Gibraltar plan connects to GibTel and costs ₹149 for 1 GB over 7 days or ₹499 for 5 GB over 30 days. Gibtelecom says its 5G covers all of Gibraltar. Its pay-as-you-go bundles last 30 days and are priced in pounds, not euros: GBP 10 for 2 GB, GBP 15 for 10 GB or GBP 20 for 20 GB, bought online, in the MyGibtelecom app or by SMS to 8100. No Jio pack covers Gibraltar; without one, Jio's rate card (last updated February 2023) charges about ₹10 per MB and ₹10 a minute. Airtel lists Gibraltar for its packs.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are on our Europe Unlimited plan (₹1,399 for 7 days), but not on the Europe 5 GB or 10 GB plans or any Global plan. Our Canary Islands plan costs ₹199 for 1 GB over 7 days, ₹699 for 5 GB over 30 days, or ₹1,299 for 7 days of Unlimited (1 GB a day at full speed, then 500 Kbps). Do not assume a Spain plan covers the islands; check its list. Tenerife Sur and Gran Canaria airports have the same free Aena Wi-Fi as Madrid, with an email sign-in. We could not confirm how Jio and Airtel bill the islands, so check in your operator's app before you fly.

Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI

A travel eSIM is data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, so your number, WhatsApp account and bank SMS stay with it. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.

• Jio: the ₹951 pack includes 25 SMS in Spain, Portugal and Andorra. In Gibraltar, where no Jio pack applies, check in the MyJio app what receiving SMS costs before you fly.
• Airtel prepaid: the IR activation pack costs ₹118 for 28 days at standard charges; check in the Airtel Thanks app whether you need it to receive SMS abroad.
• Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month (since 8 October 2026) include one free 5-day roaming trip a year with 5 GB and free incoming SMS. Airtel has not listed the countries.
• Vi: check the roaming and SMS rules for your plan in the Vi app.
• WhatsApp: EU open-internet rules stop operators in Spain, the Canary Islands included, and Portugal from blocking or slowing apps such as WhatsApp and FaceTime.
• UPI: UPI merchant payments were not live in any of these places on 31 August 2026, so carry a card or forex card.

Set it up at home

1. Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
2. Buy one regional plan, or one plan per country, and scan each QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India. It takes about two minutes per eSIM.
3. On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
4. After landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the line for mobile data.

When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice

Choose a Jio or Airtel pack if you will make many normal calls on your Indian number: Jio's ₹951 pack has 100 outgoing and 100 incoming minutes over 10 days, and Airtel's ₹1,298 pack has 200 minutes. A pack also suits a single day in Andorra, which none of our Europe plans covers. See Jio vs Airtel vs Vi roaming packs.

Choose a local SIM for a long stay or a local number. Vodafone Spain's EUR 10 plan includes 500 minutes, and under the EU's Roam like at home rules a Spanish or Portuguese SIM works across the 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Ukraine and Moldova at home prices, within fair-use limits. Those rules do not cover Andorra or Gibraltar.
