Mexico and Central America eSIM for Indians (2026): Cancun to Panama

Country plans, one Global eSIM or a Jio or Airtel pack for Mexico and Central America: what each one misses, and how to keep bank OTPs coming.

Does Jio work in Mexico? Yes, but Belize, Nicaragua and Panama are on none of Jio's roaming packs. Your choices are a Jio or Airtel pack, a local SIM, or a travel eSIM installed before you leave India, and the best one changes at each border.

Short answer

Yes, Jio works in Mexico, with packs from ₹589 for one day, and Airtel's ₹1,298 pack gives 6 GB for 10 days. Our Mexico eSIM is ₹1,199 for 5 GB over 30 days and works only in Mexico. For several countries, our Global 5 GB plan (₹3,099) covers Mexico and six Central American countries but not Belize, and Jio's roaming packs skip Belize, Nicaragua and Panama.

Regional plan or country plans: read the coverage list

Each regional plan has its own country list, shown on the plan card before you pay, so do not assume. On 21 October 2026 our Global plans (5 GB for ₹3,099 or 10 GB for ₹5,799) covered Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. Our Latin America plan (5 GB for ₹3,599) covered the six Central American countries but not Mexico. No regional plan covered Belize.

For one or two countries, country plans usually cost less and give more data in total. For three or more, one Global eSIM costs less than three country plans, though its 5 GB is shared across the trip.

Country by country

Mexico

Our Mexico plan connects to Telcel, AT&T and Movistar. Opensignal's October 2025 report gave Telcel the Reliability and Coverage Experience awards and all four speed awards; its 5G downloads averaged 180.7 Mbps, over three times AT&T's. Telcel and Movistar have stores at Mexico City airport, but since 9 January 2026 every new Mexican line must be linked to its owner's ID to get service. A passport is enough for foreigners, and a prepaid line not linked within 30 days of its first top-up loses its top-up benefits. That is one reason a travel eSIM is simpler for a short trip: you install it at home and have data when you land.

Belize

Our Belize plan connects to DigiCell, but it is costly: ₹6,399 for 5 GB, or ₹1,499 for 1 GB over 7 days, and no regional plan covers Belize. For most visitors the local option is better: Smart's Tour SIM or Tour eSIM (Explore 1) costs BZD 45 (US$22.50 at Belize's fixed rate of BZ$2 to US$1) for 10 days of unlimited data, plus BZD 35 of talk time and 130 SMS. You can buy the eSIM before the trip; it is activated in Belize. Belize is on none of Jio's roaming pack lists, and Airtel does not list it either.

Guatemala

Guatemala has two operators, Claro and Tigo, and our Guatemala plan uses both. Opensignal's February 2026 report named Claro Best Network, while Tigo won Coverage Experience. Jio covers Guatemala only with its 132-country pack (₹1,499 for 14 days with 2 GB) and data-only packs. Before you fly, fill in the online immigration declaration run by the tax agency SAT and keep the QR code: you need it again when you leave.

El Salvador

Our El Salvador plan connects to Claro, Movistar and Tigo. El Salvador is on Jio's 100-country list (₹951 for 10 days with 4 GB), and Airtel covers it. Check your route if you connect in San Salvador: the airport authority CEPA charges connecting passengers of listed nationalities, including Indians, an Airport Improvements Fee of USD 1,130. The US dollar and bitcoin are both official currency.

Honduras

Our Honduras plan connects to Claro and Tigo and costs ₹1,399 for 5 GB over 30 days. Ookla's median download is 63.88 Mbps (87th). Honduras is on Jio's 132-country and data-only lists, and Airtel covers it. The UK Foreign Office says US dollars are widely accepted, and advises using ATMs inside shopping centres and changing money at hotels or banks.

Nicaragua

Our Nicaragua plan connects to Claro. Nicaragua is on none of Jio's roaming pack lists, and Jio's pay-as-you-go data there is about ₹1,000 per MB (rates dated 23 December 2025); Airtel does cover it. Freedom House's 2025 report found no blocking of social media, though about 15 media and university websites on the .ni domain were blocked in March 2025. Carry US dollars in cash: visitors pay a USD 10 arrival tax.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica has three operators: Claro, Kölbi and Liberty. Opensignal's April 2026 report gave Claro all the overall experience awards and Kölbi the Coverage Experience award. Our Costa Rica plan uses Claro and costs ₹1,099 for 5 GB or ₹1,599 for 10 GB over 30 days. The tourism board says you can also buy a prepaid SIM at the Kölbi airport booth. Costa Rica is on Jio's 75-, 100- and 132-country lists. Restaurant and hotel prices already include a 10% tip.

Panama

Panama has two operators, Tigo and +Móvil, since Digicel closed in 2024. Panama is on none of Jio's roaming pack lists: without one, Jio charges about ₹600 per MB and ₹150 a minute for calls to India. Airtel covers Panama, and our 5 GB plan is ₹1,799. The UK Foreign Office advises ride-hailing apps or hotel transport over street taxis, and warns that mobile coverage is unreliable on hiking trails.

Before you land in Mexico

  • No paper tourist card by air. Mexico's immigration institute (INM) says air arrivals get the FMM digitally at entry; the online form is only for land arrivals.
  • Visitax for Cancún, Tulum and Cozumel. Quintana Roo charges every foreign tourist, children included, a Visitax paid online. Keep the proof: the UK Foreign Office says it must be shown at the airport when you leave.
  • Visa. INM lists India as visa-required, but a valid visa from the US, Canada, Japan, the UK or any Schengen country, or permanent residence there or in Chile, Colombia or Peru, can be shown instead. Check INM's visa page before you book.
  • Taxis in Cancún. The UK Foreign Office says taxi drivers protesting against Uber have pulled tourists out of Uber cars near Cancún's hotels, and advises only authorised pre-paid taxis at airports.

Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI

A travel eSIM is data only, so keep your Indian SIM in the phone as the second line for your number, WhatsApp account and bank SMS. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.

  • Jio: the ₹951 pack includes 25 SMS. In Belize, Nicaragua and Panama, check in the MyJio app what receiving SMS costs before you fly.
  • Airtel: the prepaid IR activation pack is ₹118 for 28 days; check in the Airtel Thanks app whether you need it to receive SMS. New postpaid plans from ₹499 a month include one free 5-day roaming trip a year, countries not listed.
  • WhatsApp: Freedom House's 2025 reports found no social media blocking in Mexico, Costa Rica or Nicaragua. We found no official rule for the other five, so test a call when you land.
  • UPI: none of these eight countries had live UPI merchant payments on 31 August 2026, so carry a card or forex card.
Avoid bill shock. Belize, Nicaragua and Panama are on none of Jio's roaming pack lists. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹1,000 per MB of data in Belize and Nicaragua, ₹600 per MB in Panama, and ₹400 a minute for calls to India from Belize. Jio's Global Pack (₹1,101 for 28 days) gives only about ₹933 of credit at those rates: less than 1 MB in Belize. Turn data roaming off on your Indian SIM.

Set it up at home

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
  2. Buy your Mexico, country or Global plan and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India.
  3. On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
  4. After landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the line for mobile data.

Step-by-step pictures for iPhone and Android are in how to install a travel eSIM.

When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice

Choose Jio's US, Mexico and Canada pack (₹1,555 for 15 days with 12 GB and 150 outgoing minutes) if you are combining the USA and Mexico and want calls on your Indian number. Jio's ₹951 pack or Airtel's ₹1,298 pack also suits a short trip with many normal calls.

Choose a local SIM for a long stay or a local number; in Mexico it has to be linked to your passport. In Belize, Smart's Tour eSIM costs less than our plan for most trips.

Questions

Does Jio work in Mexico?

Yes. Mexico is on Jio's 75-, 100- and 132-country lists, so the ₹589 one-day and ₹951 ten-day packs work there, and the US, Mexico and Canada pack covers a combined trip from ₹1,555. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹2 per MB.

Can I use my Indian SIM in Mexico and Central America, and will OTPs arrive?

Yes, in most of the region, but buy a pack first. Keep it on as the second line so bank SMS reach you while the eSIM handles data. Jio has no roaming pack for Belize, Nicaragua or Panama, and Airtel has none for Belize.

Do I need a SIM card in Mexico?

No. A travel eSIM installed at home gives you data when you land. A Mexican SIM suits a long stay, but every new line must now be linked to the owner's ID; a passport is enough for visitors.

Which network is best at Cancun and Tulum?

We have no network test for Cancún or Tulum on their own. Across Mexico, Opensignal's October 2025 report gave Telcel the coverage, reliability and speed awards, and our Mexico plan can use Telcel.

Does a Mexico eSIM work in Guatemala or Belize?

No. A Mexico plan works only in Mexico. Guatemala needs its own plan (₹1,599 for 5 GB) or the Global plan. No regional plan covers Belize, where Smart's Tour eSIM is the simpler choice.

Is one Central America plan better?

For three or more countries, usually yes: Global 5 GB (₹3,099) covers seven of them in one eSIM. For Mexico plus Costa Rica, the two country plans (₹1,199 and ₹1,099) cost less. Our Latin America plan does not cover Mexico.

Can I share it as a hotspot?

Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
