Does Jio work in New Zealand? Yes, and so does Airtel, but their packs are light on data for a road trip. Most Indian travellers choose between a roaming pack, a One NZ or 2degrees Travel SIM bought on arrival, or a travel eSIM installed at home, and this guide compares all three.

Short answer

For a trip to both Australia and New Zealand, buy two country eSIMs, one for each country, rather than counting on one country's plan to work in the other; eSIMKite's New Zealand plan is ₹749 for 5 GB over 30 days and connects to One NZ and Spark. Jio and Airtel do roam in New Zealand, but Jio's 10-day pack is ₹951 for 4 GB and Airtel's is ₹1,298 for 6 GB. Coverage drops in remote areas without towers, so download offline maps before a road trip.

Networks and speeds: One NZ, Spark and 2degrees

New Zealand has three mobile networks: 2degrees, One NZ and Spark. eSIMKite's New Zealand plans connect to One NZ and Spark. In Opensignal's October 2025 report, Spark won Coverage Experience with 9.1 out of 10 against One NZ's 8.5, and Opensignal calls Spark the operator with the widest footprint of coverage nationally. One NZ won Download Speed Experience at 80.7 Mbps and 5G Availability, leading it outright in Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Canterbury and Wellington. 2degrees won the most awards overall: 5 outright and 5 joint out of 14.

Ookla's Speedtest Global Index for September 2026 puts New Zealand's median mobile download at 148.06 Mbps, 20th in the world. One NZ says its network covers over 99% of the places New Zealanders live, work and play, which is not the same as every remote road.

Road-trip coverage gaps

Rural coverage is growing but is not complete. The government's telecoms report for July to December 2025 says the rural programme now covers 2,219 km of state highway and local roads and 197 tourism sites, with 572 Rural Connectivity Group towers live. 2degrees warns that coverage may be lost in remote areas without mobile towers.

The networks are adding satellite-to-phone service for places without towers: 2degrees with AST SpaceMobile, One NZ with Starlink and Spark with Lynk (Opensignal, October 2025). One NZ's Travel SIM page lists a One NZ Satellite Data Add-On at NZ$20 a month.

  • Download offline maps of your whole route on hotel Wi-Fi before you set off, so navigation keeps working in the gaps.
  • Check the operator's coverage map for long remote stretches, such as the road to Milford Sound or the Haast Pass. We did not find an official list of black spots for these roads, so plan as if you will be offline there.

Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI

A travel eSIM is data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, so your number, WhatsApp account and bank SMS stay with it. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.

  • Jio: New Zealand is on Jio's 75-, 100- and 132-country pack lists, and the ₹951 pack includes 25 SMS. If you skip a pack, check in the MyJio app what receiving SMS costs before you fly.
  • Airtel prepaid: New Zealand is on Airtel's covered-countries list. The IR activation pack costs ₹118 for 28 days at standard charges; check in the Airtel Thanks app whether you need it to receive SMS abroad.
  • Airtel postpaid: new postpaid plans from ₹499 a month (since 8 October 2026) include one free 5-day roaming trip a year, with 5 GB, 60 minutes and free incoming SMS. Airtel has not listed the countries.
  • Vi: check the roaming and SMS rules for your plan in the Vi app before you fly.
  • WhatsApp: messages and calls go over the eSIM's data or Wi-Fi, and your WhatsApp account keeps your Indian number.
  • UPI: UPI merchant payments were not live in New Zealand on 31 August 2026, so carry a card or forex card.
Avoid bill shock. Without a pack, Jio charges 2 paise per 10 KB of data in New Zealand, about ₹2 per MB, and ₹2 a minute for calls, incoming calls included. Leave data roaming off on your Indian SIM unless you have bought a pack, and set the eSIM as your mobile data line.

Before you land

  • New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD): every traveller, babies included, must complete it. It is free, online or in the NZTD app. For flights you can submit it no earlier than 24 hours before your trip starts, and it must be done by the time you reach passport control.
  • Visa: Indian passport holders need a Visitor Visa, as the NZeTA is not open to them; check fees and rules on Immigration New Zealand's visitor visa page.
  • Auckland transport: buses, trains and most ferries take contactless Visa, Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, with a NZ$20 daily fare cap. Fullers' Waiheke ferries are not included.

Students: your first week in New Zealand

New Zealand had 92,580 international students in 2025, and India was the second-largest source at 14%, after China (ICEF, citing Education New Zealand). If you are flying out for a course, you need data the moment you land: for messages from your university, maps to your accommodation and bank OTPs on your Indian number.

  • Before you fly: install a New Zealand eSIM at home. Unlimited for 7 days at ₹949, or 5 GB for 30 days at ₹749, covers the first week.
  • First weeks: keep your Indian SIM on as the second line, so OTPs keep arriving while you set up bank and app accounts.
  • Once you settle: a local SIM gives you a New Zealand number. The Travel SIMs below are built for visitors, so ask in store about plans for a longer stay.

Set it up at home

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
  2. Buy the New Zealand plan and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India. It takes about two minutes.
  3. On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
  4. After landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the line for mobile data.

Step-by-step pictures for iPhone and Android are in how to install a travel eSIM.

When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice

Choose a Jio or Airtel pack if you will make many normal calls on your Indian number: Jio's ₹951 pack has 100 outgoing and 100 incoming minutes over 10 days, and Airtel's ₹1,298 pack has 200 minutes. For a month, Jio's 100-country pack is ₹2,851 for 12 GB over 30 days. If you mostly call India from Wi-Fi, Jio's Wi-Fi calling packs cost ₹121 for 100 minutes over 2 days or ₹521 for 500 minutes over 10 days, if your phone supports Wi-Fi calling.

Choose a local Travel SIM for a long stay, a New Zealand number or unlimited data. One NZ sells its Travel SIM at its stores in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown international airports, from NZ$29 for 30 days, or as a Travel eSIM online that you activate on arrival; an NZ$5 add-on gives 24 hours of unlimited New Zealand data. 2degrees' Unlimited Travel SIM gives unlimited data, calls and texts within New Zealand under fair use, for 3 to 30 days, but international calls are not included.

Questions

Does Jio work in New Zealand?

Yes. New Zealand is on Jio's 75-, 100- and 132-country pack lists; the 10-day ₹951 pack gives 4 GB, 100 outgoing and 100 incoming minutes and 25 SMS. Airtel's packs cover it too, from ₹998 for 5 days. For data alone, the 5 GB eSIM at ₹749 for 30 days costs less; see Jio vs Airtel vs Vi roaming packs.

Can I use my Indian SIM in New Zealand and still get bank OTPs?

Yes. Keep it switched on as the second line and bank SMS reach you while the eSIM handles data. Check in the MyJio, Airtel Thanks or Vi app what receiving SMS costs on your plan, and leave data roaming off on the Indian SIM unless you have bought a pack.

Do I need a SIM card in New Zealand?

No. A travel eSIM installed at home gives you data when you land, with no physical SIM card. You need a local SIM only if you want a New Zealand number, for example for a long stay.

Which network is best for a South Island road trip?

Spark: Opensignal's October 2025 report gave it the Coverage Experience award and calls it the operator with the widest footprint nationally, while One NZ was fastest for downloads. eSIMKite's New Zealand plans connect to both. No network covers every remote road, so download offline maps.

Where will I have no signal, for example at Milford Sound or Haast?

Expect gaps in remote areas without mobile towers. We did not find an official black-spot list for the road to Milford Sound or the Haast Pass, so check the coverage map and download offline maps before you drive.

Does an Australia eSIM work in New Zealand?

Do not count on it. Buy a New Zealand plan for the New Zealand part of the trip and a separate plan for Australia, and check the country list on any plan before you pay. Australia also has a phone check to do before you fly, covered in our Australia guide.

What should a student buy for the first week?

Install a travel eSIM before you leave India, such as 5 GB for 30 days at ₹749 or Unlimited for 7 days at ₹949, so you have data from the airport. Keep your Indian SIM on for OTPs, and get a local SIM once you need a New Zealand number.

Can I share the eSIM as a hotspot?

Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
