Switzerland eSIM for Indians (2026): does Jio work, and which plans include Switzerland?

What staying online in Switzerland and Liechtenstein costs, what to expect in the Alps, and how to keep bank OTPs coming to your Indian number.

Switzerland is in Schengen but outside the EU's roaming rules, so a Europe SIM or eSIM covers it only if its country list says so. Here is how a Jio or Airtel pack, a Swiss prepaid SIM and a travel eSIM compare on price, coverage and bank OTPs.

Short answer

Three eSIMKite Europe plans include Switzerland and Liechtenstein, as of 21 October 2026: 5 GB for 30 days at ₹499, 10 GB for 30 days at ₹749 and Unlimited for 7 days at ₹1,399, but not every Europe plan does, so check the list before you pay. For Switzerland alone, the Switzerland plan is ₹399 for 5 GB. Jio works there too: its 10-day pack is ₹951 for 4 GB, and Airtel's is ₹1,298 for 6 GB.

Other sizes: 1 GB for 7 days is ₹99, and 3 GB is ₹299, 20 GB is ₹1,399 and 50 GB is ₹2,899, each for 30 days. Unlimited plans give 1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 Kbps: ₹299 for 3 days, ₹449 for 5, ₹849 for 10, ₹1,299 for 15 and ₹2,299 for 30. The 30-day plans cost less than the 7-day versions: 5 GB is ₹399 against ₹849, and 10 GB is ₹749 against ₹1,399. Every plan is on the Switzerland eSIM page.

Plans that include Switzerland (and the ones that do not)

Switzerland is not in the EU's Roam like at home zone, so operators include it only if they choose to, and Switzerland's regulator, OFCOM, says there is no international agreement that would cap Swiss roaming prices. So a Europe SIM or eSIM covers Switzerland only if its seller adds it.

Not every Europe plan on our site includes Switzerland, and some leave out the Netherlands, so open the country list on the Europe eSIM page before you pay; our Europe guide lists each plan's countries. For Switzerland alone, the Switzerland plan costs less: ₹399 against ₹499 for 5 GB, and ₹599 against ₹1,399 for 7 days of Unlimited. 10 GB is ₹749 on both, so pick the Europe plan if other countries are on the route.

Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt: signal in the Alps

Our Switzerland plans connect to Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt, the three operators with shops at Zurich Airport. The regulator ComCom awarded 5G frequencies to the operators in February 2019. Ookla put Switzerland's average mobile download at 201.08 Mbps in September 2026, 35th in the world.

We could not find a 2025 or 2026 independent ranking of the Swiss networks that we could check, so we do not name a winner. We also found no official statement on mobile coverage at Jungfraujoch, Zermatt or on the Glacier Express. Before a mountain day, download offline maps and your tickets on hotel Wi-Fi.

Switzerland Tourism recommends SwitzerlandMobility for hiking routes, swisstopo for maps, the Rega app for mountain rescue alerts and MountaiNow for mountain conditions. Indians booked over 678,000 hotel nights in Switzerland in 2025, up 1.8%, keeping India among its top 10 source markets.

Liechtenstein

For your phone, Liechtenstein is simpler than Switzerland. It is in the EU's Roam like at home zone, unlike its neighbour, and it is one of the four non-EU Schengen members, so your Schengen visa covers it. It is on all of Jio's roaming pack lists, and Airtel's packs cover it. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹2 per MB of data there but ₹10 a minute for calls, incoming included.

All the Europe and Global plans in the table above include Liechtenstein. There is also a separate Liechtenstein plan: 1 GB for 7 days is ₹99 and 5 GB for 30 days is ₹399.

Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI

A travel eSIM is data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, so bank SMS still reach your number and WhatsApp keeps your Indian number. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.

  • Jio: keep your plan valid and the SIM switched on. The 1-day and 10-day packs include 20 and 25 SMS. Without a pack, Jio charges ₹5 a minute for calls in Switzerland, incoming included. Check in MyJio what receiving SMS costs.
  • Airtel prepaid: the ₹118 roaming activation pack (28 days) switches roaming on at standard charges, without buying data. Check in the Airtel Thanks app what receiving SMS costs.
  • Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month include one free 5-day roaming trip a year (5 GB, 60 minutes, free incoming SMS); the announcement lists no countries, so check Switzerland is included.
  • Vi: check your roaming options and SMS charges in the Vi app before you fly.
  • WhatsApp and FaceTime calls go over the eSIM's data, and WhatsApp keeps your Indian number.
  • UPI does not work in Swiss shops: it was not live in Switzerland or Liechtenstein as of 31 August 2026. Switzerland uses the Swiss franc, euros are very often accepted with change in francs, and cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Avoid bill shock. Turn data roaming off for your Indian SIM unless you have bought a pack, and set the eSIM as your mobile data line. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹5 per MB of data in Switzerland, and app updates and photo backups run in the background.

Before you land

  • Visa: Indians need a Schengen C visa, applied for at Swiss representations abroad; see the State Secretariat for Migration's visa page.
  • Fingerprints at the border. Under the EU Entry/Exit System, Indians must register biometric data at border control, and Zurich Airport warns of longer waits. There is no arrival form or fee, and ETIAS does not apply to Indians.
  • Wi-Fi on arrival. Zurich Airport gives 8 hours free, with a code sent by SMS to your mobile number or one from a Wi-Fi station or information desk using your boarding pass. Geneva takes an SMS code, a boarding-pass scan or ID at the Visitors Center. A data-only eSIM has no phone number, so the boarding pass is the easy route.
  • Trains. The SBB Mobile app sells tickets, and its EasyRide feature lets you swipe to start a trip and get billed for train, bus, tram and boat. The Swiss Travel Pass starts at CHF 254.
  • Rides. Uber runs 24/7 in Zurich and Geneva, with airport pick-ups at both, and Bolt runs in Zurich, including airport rides.

Set it up at home

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
  2. Buy the Switzerland plan, or a Europe plan that lists Switzerland, and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India. It takes about two minutes.
  3. Leave the eSIM line off until you land. On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
  4. After landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the line for mobile data.

Step-by-step pictures for iPhone and Android are in how to install a travel eSIM.

When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice

A roaming pack is the better buy if you will make many normal calls on your Indian number: Jio's ₹951 pack has 100 minutes out and 100 in over 10 days, and Airtel's ₹1,298 pack has 200 minutes. See Jio vs Airtel vs Vi roaming packs for every pack.

A Swiss SIM suits a long stay inside Switzerland. Swisscom's Prepaid Flat 30 is CHF 65 for 30 days of unlimited Swiss data, calls and SMS. Sunrise's prepaid starter pack is CHF 19.90 with CHF 20 of credit, sold at Sunrise shops, Migros, Coop, ALDI, Mobilezone, kiosks and SBB ticket machines. You need a passport or ID card; Swisscom does not accept a driving licence.

Questions

Does Jio work in Switzerland?

Yes. Switzerland is on Jio's 75-, 100- and 132-country roaming pack lists. The 1-day pack is ₹589 for 1 GB and 100 minutes, and the 10-day pack is ₹951 for 4 GB, 100 minutes out and 100 in. For data alone, 5 GB on the Switzerland eSIM is ₹399 for 30 days.

Which eSIMKite Europe plans include Switzerland?

On 21 October 2026: Europe 5 GB for 30 days (₹499), Europe 10 GB for 30 days (₹749) and Europe Unlimited for 7 days (₹1,399), plus our Global plans. Some other Europe plans leave Switzerland out, so check the country list before you pay.

Can I use my Indian SIM in Switzerland?

Yes. Jio and Airtel packs both cover it. If an eSIM carries your data, keep the Indian SIM on as the second line with roaming active so bank OTPs reach you.

Do I need a SIM card in Switzerland, and does it need a passport?

No, an eSIM installed at home covers your data. If you want a Swiss number, Swisscom and Sunrise prepaid SIMs need a valid passport or ID card, and Swisscom does not accept a driving licence.

Will I have signal on Jungfraujoch, Zermatt and the Glacier Express?

We found no official coverage statement for Jungfraujoch, Zermatt or the Glacier Express, so we cannot promise signal all the way. Download offline maps and tickets before a mountain day.

Is Zurich airport Wi-Fi usable without a Swiss number?

Yes. Besides an SMS code to your mobile number, you can get a code from a Wi-Fi station or information desk using your boarding pass. The free session lasts 8 hours.

Does the eSIM work in Liechtenstein?

The Europe and Global plans in this guide include Liechtenstein, and there is a separate Liechtenstein plan from ₹99 for 1 GB over 7 days. Jio and Airtel packs cover it too.

Can I share it as a hotspot?

Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
