Jio and Airtel both work in South Korea with a roaming pack, so the choice is between that pack, KT's visitor eSIM from the Incheon counters, and a travel eSIM installed at home. Korea adds a twist: the apps that get you around, from Naver Maps to Korail, all need data.

Short answer

Any eSIM-ready phone from India can use eSIMKite's South Korea eSIM: it connects to SK Telecom and LG U+, and Unlimited for 7 days costs ₹399 (1 GB a day at full speed, then 384 Kbps), or 5 GB for 30 days costs ₹499. Jio works in Korea too, but its 10-day pack is ₹951 for 4 GB and Airtel's is ₹1,298 for 6 GB, both with calls. If you need a Korean phone number, KT sells a visitor eSIM with calls at its airport counters.

Other plans run for 30 days: 1 GB for 7 days is ₹149 for a stopover, 3 GB is ₹349, 10 GB is ₹699, 20 GB is ₹1,299 and 50 GB is ₹2,899. Unlimited plans give 1 GB a day at full speed, then 384 Kbps: ₹199 for 3 days, ₹299 for 5 days, ₹399 for 7 days, ₹1,199 for 10 days, ₹749 for 15 days and ₹1,499 for 30 days. Note the odd one out: on 21 October the 10-day Unlimited plan cost more than the 15-day one, so for a trip of 8 to 15 days, buy the 15-day plan at ₹749.

Networks and coverage in South Korea

South Korea has three main operators, SK Telecom, KT and LG U+, and eSIMKite's South Korea plans connect to SK Telecom and LG U+. In Opensignal's December 2025 report, SK Telecom won Best Network with 9 outright and 3 joint awards, LG U+ won 5G Availability at 90.3%, and KT won 5G Download Speed, 20 Mbps ahead of SK Telecom and 34.5 Mbps ahead of LG U+. Video Experience scores were SK Telecom 76.6, KT 73.0 and LG U+ 72.4, all rated Very Good, meaning 1080p video or better usually streams smoothly.

Ookla's Speedtest Global Index for September 2026 ranks South Korea 4th in the world for mobile, with a median download of 374.01 Mbps, 35.02 Mbps upload and 27 ms latency. These are national figures; we have no city-by-city results for Seoul, Busan or Jeju.

Maps and ride apps that need data

The Korea Tourism Organization (VISITKOREA) recommends Naver Maps, which it calls the map most Koreans use, and Papago for translation. For trains there is Let's Korail or Korail+, for tickets and the Korail Pass. For rides, k.ride is a taxi-style app for international visitors that takes overseas cards and Alipay+; GoHanpass covers KTX, buses and taxis and signs up with a passport.

To pay for transport, the Mobile Tmoney app turns your phone into a transport card and takes international cards including Mastercard, American Express and UnionPay. WOWPASS is a prepaid card app for travellers that combines a transport card and a debit card, topped up at exchange kiosks or in the app.

One Korean quirk: many local apps ask you to verify a Korean mobile number. VISITKOREA points to Creatrip for booking restaurants and ordering food delivery without that step. KT's visitor eSIM does not get round it either, since KT says it does not support Korean phone-based identity checks.

Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI

eSIMKite plans are data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, so your number, WhatsApp and UPI apps stay as they are. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.

  • Jio: South Korea is on Jio's 75-, 100- and 132-country lists; the ₹589 1-day pack includes 20 SMS and the ₹951 pack 25. Check in MyJio whether your plan receives SMS abroad without a pack.
  • Airtel prepaid: Korea is on Airtel's covered-countries list; the 5- and 10-day packs include 20 SMS, and the activation pack is ₹118 for 28 days at standard charges.
  • Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month include one free roaming trip a year from 8 Oct 2026, with 5 GB, 60 minutes and free incoming SMS for 5 days. The countries are not listed, so check the app.
  • Vi: check in the Vi app whether you need a pack to receive SMS abroad.
  • WhatsApp: Freedom House's 2025 report says social media is not blocked in South Korea, though some websites are. WhatsApp messages and calls go over the eSIM's data and keep your Indian number.
  • UPI: South Korea was not among the places with live UPI merchant payments on 31 August 2026, so carry a card, a forex card or a prepaid travel card such as WOWPASS.
Avoid bill shock. Without a pack, Jio charges about ₹2 per MB of data in South Korea and ₹2 a minute even for incoming calls (Jio's rate list, 14 Oct 2026), so 300 MB of maps and photos would cost more than our 7-day Unlimited plan at ₹399. Turn data roaming off for your Indian SIM and choose the eSIM as your mobile data line.

Before you land

  • e-Arrival Card: submit Korea's free e-Arrival Card within 3 days before you arrive. Korean visa holders must submit it; K-ETA holders, and group tourists from India on group visas issued through Korean missions, are excluded. The official site warns that fake sites exist, and any site asking for payment is not official.
  • Visa: check what you need on the official Korea Visa Portal. K-ETA is only for visa-exempt nationals, and India is not on its temporary exemption list (VISITKOREA, 18 Sep 2026).
  • At the airport: KT's roaming centres at Incheon Terminal 1 arrivals are near Arrival Hall A, opposite Exit 2 (06:00 to 22:00), and near Arrival Hall F, opposite Exit 13 (24 hours). There are more at Terminal 2, Gimpo and Gimhae. You only need them for a KT SIM.
  • Download at home: Naver Maps, Papago, Korail, k.ride or GoHanpass, Mobile Tmoney or WOWPASS, and the government's multilingual Emergency Ready app.

Combining Korea and Japan on one trip

If Japan is on the same trip, plan for two country eSIMs: a South Korea plan and a Japan plan. Install both at home on Wi-Fi, keep the Japan line off until you land there, and switch the mobile data line when you change countries. On most plans the validity starts on first connection in that country, so buying both before you leave does not cost you days. Japan's prices and arrival rules are in our Japan guide.

Set it up at home

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
  2. Buy the South Korea plan and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India.
  3. On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
  4. On landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the mobile data line.

Step-by-step pictures for iPhone and Android are in how to install a travel eSIM.

When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice

Pick a roaming pack if you will make many normal calls on your Indian number: Jio's ₹951 pack gives 100 outgoing and 100 incoming minutes with 4 GB for 10 days, and Airtel's ₹1,298 pack 200 minutes with 6 GB. Jio's data-only packs also list Korea, from ₹999 for 2 GB over 14 days, though that is less data for more money than our 3 GB plan at ₹349.

Pick KT's visitor eSIM if you need a Korean 010 number or far more full-speed data: data only costs KRW 35,000 for 7 days or KRW 71,500 for 30 days, and Data & Voice KRW 40,500 for 7 days or KRW 77,000 for 30. The voice version is sold only at KT's airport roaming centres after an identity check, one per passport. Korean-issued cards are not accepted, your phone must not be country-locked, and the eSIM lasts at most 90 days. The travel eSIM makes most sense when you want data from the moment you land and your Indian SIM kept for calls and OTPs. More in Jio vs Airtel vs Vi roaming packs.

Questions

Does Jio work in South Korea, and is it cheaper than an eSIM?

Yes, Jio works there: South Korea is on its 75-, 100- and 132-country lists, and ₹951 buys 10 days with 4 GB and 100 outgoing plus 100 incoming minutes. Airtel's ₹998 pack gives 4 GB and 150 minutes for 5 days. For data alone, our Unlimited plan at ₹399 for 7 days costs less; for many normal calls, a roaming pack is the better buy.

Can I use my Indian SIM in South Korea and still get bank OTPs?

Yes. Keep it on as the second line with data roaming off, and OTPs arrive as long as your plan receives SMS abroad. Check the MyJio, Airtel Thanks or Vi app before you fly.

Do I need a SIM card at Incheon airport?

No, not if you install a travel eSIM at home or buy a roaming pack. You need KT's airport counters only for a Korean number: its Data & Voice eSIM is sold there after an identity check, while its data-only eSIM can be bought online.

Which network is best in Seoul and on Jeju?

Nationally, SK Telecom won Best Network in Opensignal's December 2025 report, LG U+ led 5G availability and KT led 5G download speed. Our plans use SK Telecom and LG U+. We have no separate results for Seoul or Jeju.

Do I need Naver Maps in Korea?

It helps. VISITKOREA calls Naver Maps the map most Koreans use and lists it first among its recommended apps. Download it at home, before you fly.

Does WhatsApp work in South Korea?

Freedom House's 2025 report says social media is not blocked in South Korea, though some websites are. WhatsApp messages and calls run over the eSIM's data and keep your Indian number.

How much data do I need for 6 days in Seoul and Busan?

With maps, subway journeys, WhatsApp and some Instagram, plan on 0.5 to 0.7 GB a day, so 3 to 4 GB. Our Unlimited plan at ₹399 for 7 days gives 1 GB a day at full speed and costs less than the 5 GB plan, so it covers this trip.

Can I share it as a hotspot?

Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
