eSIM vs international roaming vs a local SIM

Three ways to stay online abroad. Here is what each one asks of you, and when a travel eSIM is the better fit.

Before a trip you have three ways to stay online: keep your home plan and switch on roaming, buy a SIM when you land, or install a travel eSIM before you go. All three get you connected. They differ in when you pay, how much setting up they need, and what happens to your own number while you're away.

Carrier roaming

Roaming is the no-effort option. Your phone works abroad on your own plan and your number stays exactly where it is. The catch is the price and the limits: roaming comes as your operator's own packs, the data is often capped, and anything outside a pack turns into a surprise bill back home. Of the three, it is often the priciest.

What it costs varies by operator, by pack and even week to week, which is why we don't quote a figure. Check your own operator's roaming terms before you fly.

A SIM bought on arrival

A local SIM puts you on a local 4G/5G network on prepaid terms. You buy it on arrival, at the counter's tourist rates and after a queue, and topping it up later means finding a local store.

The bigger cost is your number. To fit the new SIM you take out the one that carries your calls, SMS and bank OTPs, and your number goes with it until you swap back.

A travel eSIM

A travel eSIM is a second, digital SIM for data. You buy it online, install it at home from a QR code in a few minutes, and it connects to a local 4G/5G network when you land. It is prepaid, so nothing is billed afterwards: when the data runs out, the connection stops rather than charging you for more.

Your physical SIM stays in the phone. Your own number keeps receiving calls, SMS and OTPs, WhatsApp stays on it and works over the eSIM's data, and there is nothing to swap back when you get home.

  • Validity starts when you land. The plan begins on first connection at your destination, not when you buy it.
  • Hotspot included. Hotspot and tethering work on every plan, so a laptop or a travel companion can share it.
  • One eSIM for several countries. A regional or global plan works in every country on its coverage list.
  • 5G where it's available. You get 5G where the plan, the local network and your phone all support it, and 4G/LTE everywhere else.
What an eSIM doesn't do: our plans are data only, so there is no local number for regular calls or SMS. Calls over WhatsApp, FaceTime and similar apps work on the data, and your home number stays yours for everything else.

Which one should you pick?

  • Roaming, if you want nothing to set up and your operator's packs suit the trip. Check the price per day first.
  • A local SIM, if you need a local number for regular calls or SMS, which a data-only eSIM does not give you.
  • A travel eSIM, if you want data the moment you land, your own number still working, and a price you know before you fly.

Whichever you choose, make sure your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked before you buy one: check your phone.
