Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar eSIM for Indians (2026): Angkor and Mekong
One Asia eSIM for Cambodia, Laos and Timor-Leste, separate plans for Myanmar and Brunei, and what Jio, Airtel and a US$5 airport SIM cost.
A Cambodia eSIM for Indians is the easy part of an Indochina trip; the harder part is knowing which plan still works in Laos, Myanmar, Brunei or Timor-Leste. Most travellers choose between a Jio or Airtel roaming pack, a tourist SIM after landing and a travel eSIM installed at home, and the answer changes from country to country.
Jio works in Cambodia and Laos only on its 132-country packs (₹1,499 for 14 days with 2 GB and 100 minutes) or data-only packs (from ₹999), while Airtel's packs cover both from ₹998 for 5 days. eSIMKite's 8-country Asia plan covers Cambodia, Laos and Timor-Leste at ₹749 for 5 GB over 30 days, ₹50 more than a Cambodia-only plan (₹699). Myanmar and Brunei are not on it and need their own plans.
Which plan covers which country
| Country | eSIMKite country plan | In our Asia plan? | Jio packs | Airtel packs | UPI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cambodia | ₹699 (5 GB, 30 days) | Yes | 132-country and data-only lists | Yes | Yes, via KHQR codes |
| Laos | ₹699 (5 GB, 30 days) | Yes | 132-country and data-only lists | Yes | No |
| Myanmar | ₹2,099 (3 GB, 30 days) | No | 132-country list only, not data-only | Yes | No |
| Brunei | ₹3,499 (5 GB, 30 days) | No | Not on Jio's lists | Yes | No |
| Timor-Leste | ₹749 (5 GB, 30 days) | Yes | Not on Jio's lists | Yes | No |

Regional plan vs country plans: read the coverage list
Each regional plan lists its countries on the plan card before you pay. On 21 October 2026, our 8-country Asia plans (5 GB for ₹749, 10 GB for ₹1,399, Unlimited for 7 days at ₹1,199) covered Cambodia, Laos and Timor-Leste. None of our regional plans covered Myanmar or Brunei, so each needs its own plan.
For Cambodia and Laos together, one Asia plan at ₹749 costs less than two country plans at ₹699 each, and keeps working across the land border without switching eSIMs. For Cambodia alone, the Cambodia plan at ₹699 is enough. If your trip starts in Vietnam or Thailand, check the Asia plan's country list for them before you buy: a Vietnam or Thailand plan is for that country, and this guide does not cover those lists.

Cambodia and Laos plans also come as 3 GB for ₹449, 10 GB for ₹1,299 and 1 GB for 7 days for ₹199. Unlimited gives 1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 Kbps in Cambodia (₹449 for 3 days, ₹999 for 7, ₹3,799 for 30) and 1 Mbps in Laos (₹549 for 3 days, ₹1,199 for 7, ₹4,599 for 30). Skip 7-day fixed plans: 5 GB for 7 days is ₹2,999, against ₹699 for 30 days. For a Cambodia-only trip with heavy data use, Smart's US$5 Traveller SIM gives far more data than our fixed plans, if you are happy to buy it at an airport booth and register your passport.
Country by country
Cambodia
Our Cambodia plan connects to Cellcard and Metfone. Ookla puts the median mobile download at 215.12 Mbps (27th in the world, September 2026), and in Opensignal's February 2026 report Cellcard won the most awards, ahead of Metfone and Smart. Smart sells its Traveller SIM (US$5 for 15 days, 30 GB) at booths at every international airport in Cambodia, and asks for a passport scan to register it. UPI works here: since 2 June 2026 you can pay by scanning KHQR codes with a UPI app at more than 4.5 million merchants. The free e-Arrival form (arrival.gov.kh) can be filed up to 7 days before arrival, and Indian passports can use the smart gates at Phnom Penh's new Techo airport. The tourist e-Visa costs US$30.
Laos
Our Laos plan connects to Lao Telecom and Unitel. Ookla puts the median mobile download at 81.18 Mbps (84th in the world, September 2026). Unitel sells a Travel SIM in its online shop, priced in kip, and ETL is another operator; we could not capture local SIM prices. Laos is on Jio's 132-country and data-only lists, and Jio charges about ₹5 per MB without a pack. UPI merchant payments were not live on 31 August 2026. The Lao eVisa (US$50 for Indians) is accepted only at set entry points, including Wattay (Vientiane), Luang Prabang and Pakse airports, the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridges I, II and IV, and Boten, so check yours before a Mekong crossing.
Myanmar
We list five plans for Myanmar, including 3 GB for 30 days at ₹2,099, and Myanmar is on none of our regional plans. MPT sells a Tourist SIM at airports, tourist places and hotels: 29,999 MMK for 2 GB, 49,999 MMK for 7 GB or 99,999 MMK for 20 GB, each for 30 days, plus a 20,000 MMK activation tax. ATOM's Tourist SIM has 20 GB, 250 minutes and 100 local SMS for 30 days, and ATOM has a shop at Yangon airport. Jio covers Myanmar only on its 132-country pack, not the data-only list, and its rate list shows no pay-as-you-go data rate. Freedom House's 2025 report scores Myanmar 9 out of 100 for internet freedom and notes frequent local shutdowns. The tourist eVisa costs US$50.
Brunei
Our Brunei plan connects to DST and costs more than the others here: ₹499 for 1 GB over 7 days, ₹1,399 for 3 GB or ₹3,499 for 5 GB over 30 days. DST's EASi Tourist SIM, for international visitors only, is 15 Brunei dollars for 3 GB of local data plus 3 dollars of credit, valid 7 days, and Progresif also sells travel eSIMs, so compare those for a short stay. Brunei is on no Jio pack list (about ₹5 per MB without one); Airtel lists it. It is on none of our regional plans. Brunei runs an E-Arrival Card, and Indian passport holders need a visa before travel, applied for in person at a Brunei mission.
Timor-Leste
Our Timor-Leste plan connects to Telemor: ₹749 for 5 GB over 30 days or ₹199 for 1 GB over 7 days, and the Asia plan covers it too. Timor Telecom also offers eSIMs, and switching between eSIM and physical SIM costs $1 at a TT shop with ID; Telkomcel is the third operator. No Jio pack covers Timor-Leste: without one, data is about ₹2 per MB, but calls cost ₹25 a minute and incoming calls ₹50. Airtel lists it. India is not on the visa-exemption list; the tourist visa on arrival costs US$30, paid in US dollar cash.
Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI
eSIMKite plans are data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, so your number, WhatsApp and bank SMS stay with it. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.
- Jio: the ₹1,499 132-country pack includes 100 SMS in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. Brunei and Timor-Leste have no Jio pack, so check in MyJio what receiving SMS costs there.
- Airtel prepaid: all five countries are on Airtel's list. The 5-day and 10-day packs include 20 SMS, and the IR activation pack is ₹118 for 28 days at standard charges.
- Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month include one free 5-day roaming trip a year from 8 Oct 2026, with free incoming SMS; the countries are not listed.
- Vi: check the roaming and SMS rules for your plan in the Vi app.
- App blocks: Freedom House's 2025 report records social media blocked in Myanmar, the Signal app and major VPNs blocked in June and July 2024, and a January 2025 law limiting VPN providers. In Cambodia it records no social media blocks, though some websites are blocked. We found no dated source for Laos, Brunei or Timor-Leste.
- UPI: works in Cambodia by scanning KHQR codes, through NPCI International and ACLEDA Bank. It was not live in Laos, Myanmar, Brunei or Timor-Leste on 31 August 2026, so carry a card or cash there.
Set it up at home
- Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
- Buy the Asia plan for Cambodia, Laos and Timor-Leste, or one plan per country (Myanmar and Brunei need their own), and scan each QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India.
- On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
- On landing, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the mobile data line.
Step-by-step pictures for iPhone and Android are in how to install a travel eSIM.
When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice
A tourist SIM for heavy data: in Cambodia, Smart's Traveller SIM gives 30 GB for US$5 over 15 days, with local minutes, sold at the airport. In Myanmar, MPT's and ATOM's tourist SIMs carry far more data than our 3 GB plan, and in Brunei DST's tourist SIM is worth comparing with our ₹1,399 3 GB plan. The trade-off is a counter visit after landing.
Roaming for calls: Airtel's ₹1,298 10-day pack gives 6 GB and 200 minutes in all five countries, and Jio's ₹1,499 pack 2 GB and 100 minutes over 14 days in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. Jio's Wi-Fi calling packs (₹121 for 100 minutes, ₹521 for 500) cover calls to India over Wi-Fi, if your phone supports it.
When our eSIM makes sense: a Cambodia and Laos route on one plan, set up at home and working from landing, with your Indian SIM kept for OTPs. More in Jio vs Airtel vs Vi roaming packs.
Questions
Does Jio or Airtel work in Cambodia and Laos?
Yes, with limits. Jio covers both only on its 132-country packs (₹1,499 for 14 days with 2 GB and 100 minutes) and its data-only packs (₹999 for 2 GB over 14 days); its ₹589 and ₹951 packs do not cover them. Airtel's packs cover both, from ₹998 for 5 days with 4 GB.
Can I use my Indian SIM in Cambodia and still get bank OTPs?
Yes. Keep it on as the second line with data roaming off, and bank SMS reach you while the eSIM handles data. Check in your operator's app what receiving SMS costs, especially in Brunei and Timor-Leste, where Jio has no pack.
Do I need a SIM card at Siem Reap airport?
No, not with a travel eSIM installed at home; it connects when you land. If you want a Cambodian SIM, Smart says it sells its US$5 Traveller SIM at booths at every international airport in Cambodia, registered with a passport scan.
Does a Vietnam eSIM work in Cambodia and Laos?
Do not count on it: a country plan is for that country. Our 8-country Asia plan covers Cambodia and Laos at ₹749 for 5 GB over 30 days; check its country list on the plan card to see whether Vietnam is on it before you buy.
Which network is best at Angkor Wat and Luang Prabang?
We have no site-by-site data. Across Cambodia, Cellcard won the most awards in Opensignal's February 2026 report, and our Cambodia plan uses Cellcard and Metfone. Our Laos plan uses Lao Telecom and Unitel; we could not confirm a ranking for Luang Prabang.
What is the situation in Myanmar for phones and internet?
Freedom House's 2025 report scores Myanmar 9 out of 100 for internet freedom: social media is blocked, Signal and major VPNs were blocked in 2024, local shutdowns are frequent, and the March 2025 Mandalay earthquake damaged networks. This guide covers phones and data only. We list five Myanmar plans, and MPT and ATOM sell tourist SIMs.
Can I share the eSIM as a hotspot?
Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
