Bhutan SIM or eSIM for Indians (2026): does Jio work, and do you need a local SIM?

Jio works in Bhutan only at pay-as-you-go rates, so the real choice is between an Airtel pack, a local tourist SIM and a travel eSIM set up at home.

Bhutan's ngultrum is pegged to the rupee, which makes local prices easy to read, but your Indian SIM is another matter: Jio has no roaming pack there, while Airtel does. You can roam with Airtel, buy a Bhutan Telecom or TashiCell tourist SIM, or install a travel eSIM before you go. Here is how they compare.

Short answer

Jio works in Bhutan only at pay-as-you-go roaming rates, because Bhutan is on none of Jio's roaming pack lists: data costs about ₹10 per MB and calls ₹10 a minute. Airtel does cover Bhutan, with ₹998 for 5 days (4 GB, 150 minutes) or ₹1,298 for 10 days (6 GB, 200 minutes). On price alone a local tourist SIM is the better buy, with 3 GB for Nu 500 over a month, while a 3 GB eSIMKite plan is ₹799 for 30 days and works the moment you land, with no counter to visit.

Networks and coverage in Bhutan

Bhutan has two mobile operators: Bhutan Telecom, whose mobile brand is B-Mobile, and TashiCell (Tashi InfoComm), incorporated in January 2007 as the country's second cellular operator. eSIMKite's Bhutan plans connect to TashiCell, which also sells 5G data plans.

Bhutan Telecom says phones need the 1800 MHz band for its 4G network, and 850 or 2100 MHz for 3G. Outside a pack, its data costs Nu 0.0003 per KB, about Nu 0.3 per MB, so a local SIM user should stick to a pack too.

Bhutan's Department of Tourism says most hotels have Wi-Fi, but it recommends a local guest SIM for more reliable internet and warns that mobile data in Bhutan can be expensive. We found no coverage maps for Punakha or the Paro to Thimphu road, so download offline maps before long drives.

Phuentsholing and border towns

From 2 June 2026 until August 2027, tourists who visit the border towns of Samtse, Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar for 24 hours do not pay the Sustainable Development Fee, as long as they stay within the designated zones. In Phuentsholing, that means not going beyond the Rinchending checkpost.

For a day trip like this, a full Bhutan plan may be more than you need. Airtel's 1-day pack is ₹698 for 1 GB and 100 minutes, and our 1 GB plan is ₹299 for 7 days. Jio users pay about ₹10 per MB once the phone joins a Bhutanese network, so switch data roaming off on the Indian SIM before you cross.

Bank OTPs, WhatsApp and UPI

eSIMKite plans are data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, so your number, WhatsApp account and UPI apps stay as they are. More in keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad.

  • Jio: with no pack for Bhutan, everything is pay-as-you-go: SMS ₹10, calls ₹10 a minute (incoming too) and data about ₹10 per MB. Check in MyJio whether your plan receives SMS abroad.
  • Airtel prepaid: the 5-day and 10-day packs include 20 SMS and the 1-day pack 10 SMS. The IR activation pack is ₹118 for 28 days at standard charges.
  • Airtel postpaid: new plans from ₹499 a month include one free roaming trip a year from 8 Oct 2026 (5 GB, 60 minutes, free incoming SMS, 5 days). The announcement does not list countries, so confirm Bhutan in the app.
  • Vi: we did not check Vi's Bhutan rates. Look in the Vi app before you go.
  • WhatsApp: messages and calls go over data, and your account keeps your Indian number.
  • UPI: payments at QR-code merchants are live in Bhutan (BusinessLine, June 2026).
  • Cash and cards: Indian rupee and US dollar cash is widely accepted. ATMs and banks take Visa and Mastercard, and international credit cards work widely in towns but may not elsewhere.
  • Wallets: the Bank of Bhutan's goBoB wallet needs a local SIM. It and Bhutan National Bank's MyPay can be linked to international credit cards, and the tourism department suggests goBoB for topping up a B-Mobile SIM.
Avoid bill shock. Bhutan has no Jio roaming pack, and Jio charges about ₹10 per MB of data there (Jio's rate list, 14 Oct 2026). Turn data roaming off for your Indian SIM and choose the eSIM as your mobile data line.

Before you land

  • Entry permit, not a visa: Indian visitors need an entry permit. Apply online before you travel, through a tour operator or hotel, or at the point of entry, where you should expect a wait and bring a passport-size photo. Carry an Indian passport or Indian voter ID card; under-18s can use a passport or birth certificate with a legal guardian. Details are on bhutan.travel.
  • Sustainable Development Fee: Indian nationals pay Nu 1,200, or the same in rupees, per person per night. Children aged 6 to 11 pay Nu 600 and under-6s pay nothing.
  • SIM on arrival: you can buy a SIM at the visitor information centre at Paro International Airport, at Bhutan Telecom and TashiCell offices, or from authorised agents in towns. Bhutan Telecom asks for a passport copy and lets you pre-book at bookyoursim.bt.bt.
  • Two airports: Bhutan has two international airports, Paro and Gelephu. The tourism department names Paro's visitor information centre for SIMs; it does not mention Gelephu.
  • Local SIM top-ups: TashiCell's tourist SIM stays active for recharges for one month from activation.

Set it up at home

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM: iPhone XS or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows, it does.
  2. Buy the Bhutan plan and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave India. It takes about two minutes.
  3. On most plans the validity starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
  4. On landing, or once you have crossed the border by road, turn the eSIM line on, switch on data roaming for it, and set it as the mobile data line.

Step-by-step pictures for iPhone and Android are in how to install a travel eSIM.

When a local SIM or roaming is the better choice

On price, a local tourist SIM wins. TashiCell and Bhutan Telecom both sell 3 GB with a month's validity and Nu 200 of talk time for Nu 500, and 7 days of unlimited data for Nu 1,100. With the ngultrum at par with the rupee, that is less than our 3 GB plan (₹799) or our 7-day Unlimited (₹1,999), even after Bhutan Telecom's 5% GST, and you get a Bhutanese number. Bhutan Telecom also sells its unlimited packs as an eSIM.

Airtel users who call home: ₹1,298 for 10 days with 6 GB and 200 minutes keeps your Indian number working for calls, with no SIM to buy. Jio users have no pack, so a few calls at ₹10 a minute are fine; for more, Jio's Wi-Fi calling packs (₹121 for 100 minutes, ₹521 for 500 minutes) cover calls to India over hotel Wi-Fi if your phone supports Wi-Fi calling.

When our eSIM makes sense: you want data from the moment you land or cross, without finding a counter, and with your Indian SIM kept in for OTPs. More in Jio vs Airtel vs Vi roaming packs.

Questions

Does Jio work in Bhutan?

Only at pay-as-you-go rates. Bhutan is not on any of Jio's roaming pack lists, so data costs about ₹10 per MB and calls ₹10 a minute, incoming included (Jio's rates, 14 Oct 2026). Keep data roaming off on a Jio SIM and use a local SIM or a travel eSIM for data.

Can I use my Indian SIM in Bhutan?

Yes, on roaming. Airtel covers Bhutan with packs of ₹698 for 1 day, ₹998 for 5 days and ₹1,298 for 10 days. Jio works only at pay-as-you-go rates, and we did not check Vi.

Do I need a SIM card in Bhutan?

Not if you roam with Airtel or use a travel eSIM, but a local tourist SIM is good value, and the tourism department recommends one for more reliable internet than hotel Wi-Fi. Buy one at Paro airport's visitor information centre, an operator office or an authorised agent; Bhutan Telecom asks for a passport copy.

Is there an eSIM for Bhutan?

Yes. eSIMKite's Bhutan plans connect to TashiCell, with 3 GB for 30 days at ₹799 and Unlimited at ₹1,999 for 7 days. Bhutan Telecom also sells its 7-day and 14-day unlimited tourist packs as an eSIM, for Nu 1,100 and Nu 1,900.

Does UPI or an Indian card work in Bhutan?

UPI works at QR-code merchants in Bhutan (BusinessLine, June 2026). ATMs and banks accept Visa and Mastercard, and credit cards are widely used in towns but may not work elsewhere. Indian rupee cash is widely accepted, and the ngultrum is pegged 1:1 to the rupee.

Will I have signal in Punakha and on the Paro to Thimphu road?

We found no coverage maps for these routes, so we cannot promise signal everywhere. Bhutan Telecom's 4G needs a phone with the 1800 MHz band, and our plans use TashiCell. Download offline maps before long drives.

Does WhatsApp work in Bhutan, and will OTPs arrive?

WhatsApp messages and calls go over data and keep your Indian number. OTPs arrive by SMS on your Indian SIM if it stays on as the second line and your plan receives SMS abroad; Jio users should check, since Bhutan has no Jio pack. Check MyJio, Airtel Thanks or the Vi app before you go.

Can I share it as a hotspot?

Usually, yes: hotspot is included on most plans. Connected devices share your plan's data.
